Even though it was the girl's birthday, Nicole couldn't find much to smile about. Everything was changing for the worst and she was left with no best friend. To make it worse, she had to find out why things were changing that very morning. It all just added up to tears.
Nicole May sat on the steps right outside the doors into the castle, sniffling and wiping away silent tears. She hated crying, expecially on her birthday. But being alone didn't help much. It was all too sad for her.
Back when she was just starting in Hogwarts, things seemed so much simpler. Even though she had to deal with telling her family that she wasn't Ravenclaw material, she felt okay knowing that she had just made a life long best friend.
"I'm in Hufflepuff too!" Allie had squeeled.
"Ohmigawd!" Nikki had been just as excited.
"Let's be best mates, yeah?!"
"WICKED!"
And just like that, the two girls had become best friends. It was so natural and so simple at the time. But now, nothing was simple or natural. Everything was complicated and made Nikki feel different and scared. She was scared of leaving Hogwarts the way she entered, not knowing Allie at all.
