End of Days - part c
As the Hub starts to be destroyed, Ianto moves to help Gwen move Jack, remembering to grab his coat on the way out!
The team confront Bilis. Ianto is providing the support to Jack.
Ianto avoids looking at Jack, but he is very aware of him, physically holding him up.
Bodies turned towards each other and almost mirroring the way they are holding onto each other.
No wonder they are all so tired, they are actually in an alleyway near the Millennium Stadium, that’s a fair old walk/stagger from the Plass!
When Gwen wants to know how to stop it, Jack is still leaning on Ianto, but Ianto is back to how he was at the start of the season, avoiding looking at Jack, or only doing so once Jack has stopped looking at him.
Jack then tells just Gwen to take him and when next we see Ianto he is using a wall to hold him up again.
Ianto has separated himself from Tosh and Owen.
Another dead body of someone he cares about.
Ianto’s eyes dart back and forth, giving away how upset he is. When Owen says that Jack is ice cold, Ianto’s head drops further down.
When Gwen insists that she wants to sit with him, Ianto glances at her for the first time and then back down again.
Owen nods his assent and Ianto looks up at Owen and opens his mouth as if he wants to say something.
Owen leaves first, followed by Tosh and each time Ianto hesitates. He is the last to move away from Jack and Gwen. He has such a look of sadness on his face, of loss, that the others are completely unaware of. It is almost as if he needs the others to stay there, in order for him to have the excuse to stay. He can’t tell them that he wants to stay too without questions being asked.
Contrast the two expressions here; Gwen’s is almost benign and there is a rawness to Ianto’s.
The team watch her sit with Jack. Owen asks how long she will do this. Ianto looks at Owen.
He holds the look for a period of time and then turns his head away.
Ianto has remained silent. The man who was willing to put across his thoughts and ideas in front of the team has disappeared.
We finally get some real confirmation of how much Jack meant to Ianto. He is tidying up his desk and looks up to see the coat.

Ianto is helping Tosh repair the table by the Cog door when Gwen and Jack appear from the Morgue. Tosh sees Jack first and runs to him. Ianto looks to where she has run from and as such does not see him at first. He then sees Jack. He stands and hurries across the walkway only slowing down as he gets close to Jack. He is unsure how to act and holds out his hand first. Jack pulls him into a close hug and Ianto gladly reciprocates. His head tucked in close to Jack’s neck, swaying together. Jack then leans back slightly as his hands raise up to cradle Jack’s neck and they kiss. A kiss of joy, of welcome back and restrained passion. For all its chasteness there is in the kiss a passion. An understanding that it is not the first time they have kissed.

During the reunion with Jack and Ianto, they intercut it with a snippet from Owen and it is then reversed during Owen and Jack’s reunion.
Owen, Tosh and Ianto head out to get coffee and when they return Jack is gone.
At the start of this episode we saw the contrast that is Ianto and his dynamic with Jack. There are strange happenings but Jack can still make Ianto smile, his face relax. Jack is using guilt on the team though for what had happened previously. Ianto feels that he has let Jack down in not being able to stop Owen from opening the Rift previously.
Ianto disagrees with Jack here on two occasions and says so in front of Tosh and then the whole team. But he is still unsure of himself at times and although he wants to tell Jack about the vision of Lisa, there is a nagging suspicion that he can save others. He balances up the need to save others with obeying Jack blindly and errs on the side of saving other people. But even though he has made up his mind to side with the others against Jack, he still wavers.
Ianto’s grief was there for all to see if they cared to look, but then he schooled his features back into the mask that he showed them for the months when he was hiding Lisa.
Lisa is no longer a sword over his head. He has moved on from her loss and although he will still love her, he has come full circle in realizing that Lisa is no more and it is time to move on.
How does Ianto see Jack in this episode? As his leader, as someone who makes wrong decisions, as his lover returned from the dead and finally as the man who has left him with some awkward questions to answer around his fellow comrades.
Thus ends season one.
