Again, aren't you being too positive about their relationship? Don't get me wrong, I do ship them with whole my heart, but is it Jack who backs off to give Ianto some personal space? Or is it Jack who just does not want to get too involved, which he's afraid he might be already, so he retreats and runs away from his lover? Isn't Ianto sort of left alone with his pain after seeing so many deaths? There's no comfort for him from Jack, honestly, apart from the "we save someone, after all" moment, which Ianto doesn't really see as this wonderful.
Did you actually see that Jack walks towards Ianto? How can walking towards someone be classed as "runs away from his lover"? Ianto is the one that walks away from Jack, not Jack walking away from Ianto.
I meant the cinema scene. When Jack walks away and Ianto is left alone, looking at the empty screen. And in the last scene yes, it's Ianto who walks away but Jack also doesn't follow, is not truly interested in getting out of him what's bugging the younger man. He seems to be thinking it's better to leave Ianto by himself. Or maybe he just doesn't feel like being his shoulder to cry on. I, once again, do not know what to make of it but I wouldn't go so far to say it's love and caring.
The problem with using words in FOOTR is that it was a very badly written episode. It pretty much comes as everyones least favourite and that is mainly due to the writing. But we can only go on what we are given
