You may not know this about me, but I am a huge American history nerd. Seriously. In high school, when we got to choose a book to read out of a list of classics, I (along with two of my friends) were the only ones who chose
Gods and Generals, AKA one of the most awesome books ever. Go read it.
In any case, as you all probably DO know, considering my ridiculous amount of ranting about it, know that I am also a CLAMP fan. Which lends itself to the statement: I love me some subtext. Delicious, delicious subtext. I'm always under the opinion that if you're writing something with a billion different ways to pair the characters, you should leave it open ended just so the fans can writhe in agony and then use their creative talents to write fanfiction to compensate. Or something unrequited is always good, too. Hence why I pair General Jeb Stuart (Confederate General) with Thomas Jackson (also a Confederate General). And John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. And Lafayette and George Washington. And Richard Henry Lee with everyone in the Continental Congress. Even though they all were married.
Yes.
IT ALL MAKES SENSE IN MY HEAD OKAY DON'T JUDGE
The fact of the matter is I enjoy a good healthy dose of unrequited love, or subtext, or both. But, when it comes to history, I like things to be very accurate.
Which is why, dear f-list, that I am here to pimp this webcomic:
Goodbye Chains. This delightful comic is set in the American Wild West, complete with a cast of characters that you will (hopefully) come to adore the way I have.
The story begins with an excellent hook, in which a dark stranger meets a not-so-dark stranger hanging from a tree. In the middle of a desert.
I kid you not. The aforementioned dark stranger is
Banquo White, outlaw and general douche bag. The not-so-dark stranger is
Colin Lord, communist and not so much of a douche bag as Banquo. In fact, he's down right sweet and seems to wants what is best. Except for the people that try and kill him. As a side note, I want his glasses, which apparently have more use than being just stylish, as I've found out from the
historical notes (scroll down to the 'eyeglass' section).
Anyway, even from the get go, this story keeps a pace that makes it a constantly entertaining read. The comic's quick wit and humor, as well as well-developed characters, propel the story, leaving you wanting the next page with all the anticipation of a CLAMP manga, except without the constant WTFery and random plot holes and shit that doesn't make sense.
"But Nikki", I hear you type (yes, HEAR), "what about that whole 'unrequited love' thing you were talking about earlier?"
This, my dear f-list, is the icing on the cake. Colin the Communist is, in fact, a homosexual, and seems to find himself falling in love with Banquo, who is quite the lady's man, and (at this point) seems very much straight. Delicous, delicious tension, especially from Colin's side. Especially when Banquo almost catches him in bed with another guy. Like I said: delicious.
All in all, this webcomic is an amazing mix of humor, action, wit, adventure, seriousness, historical accuracy, and it's own
doggy omake. I kid you not.
GO FORTH AND READ IT
You won't regret it ;)
