Venturing Into the Social World

Aug 28, 2004 02:43

Okay, so I'm glad I went.  ::grudgingly gives due to idea that socializing can be more fun than staying home::

I had nearly decided on not going at all when I got a voicemail from P. saying that they were all just leaving and they would be at the bar in half an hour.  Well...okay.  I finally ate a turkey & cheese bagel so I would have at least *some* food in me before pouring in alcohol.  The plan was for a shower, but then I realized I would walk outside and instantly be sweating again.  The hair was looking as good as it was going to look.  I did make the concession of throwing on my Torrid tank top to be a *little* hip.

I had forgotten how much I hate Madison pedestrians on Friday nights.  The morons just step off whatever sidewalk they feel like.  They will look directly at my car, which is coming toward them and the green light I have, and walk right out into the intersection.  I fervantly believe in the Darwin Effect in these situations.

Plus, it was raining!  Why would you walk in front of a car in the rain in the dark?!

But I arrived unharmed and even found a spot on the street.  The bar was typical bar.  Loud, smoky, with people yelling to people 8 inches away from them.  Still, all the CA100 people were there, so I had lots of conversations to choose from.  I got to meet L.'s boyfriend, who was quite the hottie.  He's actually a published author, with his second novel on the way.  I was impressed.

Mostly, I was just sitting around with the same people I sat around with all week, only this time it was voluntary.  Plus there was alcohol (I missed my Woodchuck!).  Seriously, I think part of it is having someplace to go on Friday night and knowing the people there.  We could all feel a little better about ourselves in a new town.

I found out P. is actually 35, which was a big "whoa!" moment for me.  I guessed much younger than that.  I ended up giving three girls a ride home, which was a nice opportunity for quieter chat.  M. and I are going to get together tomorrow night for something a little tamer.  I'm not going to organize anything with the group for tomorrow, not after this.  At least I have all that contact info!

I think several people will be at the Farmer's Market, too, so maybe I'll run into them there.  I love that I might run into someone I know.  It's such a contrast to my outsider status last week!  Weird to think how much has changed for me socially in one week.

And now I am very sleepy, but I wanted to post and claim credit for not being a homebody after all.  Yay me!
