Wait, wait, wait, they're only airing the pilot of Glee? That's it? I have to wait until fall to see the next episode? That's nuts. I disapprove.
I do approve of the pilot itself, however. I love the music choices, and the background acapella. I like the actress playing the lead student, and I think the lead actor playing the teacher is doing a great job with giving the guy real heart. I can take or leave the lead male student, but maybe he'll grow on me.
Problematic:
- Clearly shot for widescreen, and they were lazy about 4:3 ratio. I saw a lot of people cut in half on the edges, and it was especially irritating, since I have a widescreen TV. I just refuse to pay another dime to DishNetwork for the HD channels.
- The black is sassy, large, and sings Aretha. We look forward to seeing her layers in future episodes, right?
- Wheelchair jokes. Not funny the first time, even less funny succeeding times.
- I don't actually think the lead male student is all that impressive. The girl, yes, but the guy - eh. Certainly not worthy of the praise being heaped on him for having a "gift." He seems so generic, and if he turns into a Dawson, I'm going to have problems with that.
- On the other hand, I didn't think the group was that bad to begin with - that "Sit Down" number didn't make me cringe.
- I have a feeling we'll be meant to root for cute redhead teacher, which means we'll have to root against the wife. Yes, the wife is annoying and self-centered, but she doesn't deserve to be cheated on. I really hope we don't see that storyline. And I really, really hope we don't see them purposely make her awful so that he can leave her guilt-free. That smacks of newbie fic bashing.
- I have no patience for "choirs" that actually consist of one or two soloists and a bunch of back-up singers. Clash of the Choirs was seriously guilty of that trope. It's boring! I was irritated when Sassy Black Girl pointed it out and no one seemed to care, and then she didn't even care. It's a valid point, people.
- I don't believe they put together that "Don't Stop Believing" number in less than two weeks. I really don't.
- I have a serious problem with Will manipulating Finn into the club with threats. It doesn't fit his character, and it's really hard to respect.
OMG, I have to love Lea Michele now. I was just watching the "Cast Photo Shoot" video on fox.com and she demonstrated the Tyra "smile with your eyes" comparison! And, I might add, she nearly did it better than Tyra. I also love punk girl's style in that shoot.
So yes, despite all my misgivings, I will be watching more. If I even remember it by the fall.
