Met up with JP last Thursday evening for the book launch event. Went okay - I've been to better. JP told me when I arrived that the young gilfted and talented novelist was being a real pain. Quite an auteur, in fact. He'd already wound quite a few of the publishing house people up the wrong way and was well on his way to succeeding with the remaining PR folk. As the evening wore on it was interesting to watch his performance. There's no dispute the guy writes well, but having been rocketed to the summit, he's manfully knocking away all the supports which will keep him there.
Anyways, JP and I managed to leave relatively early on and headed to the after-drinks venue. Quite a smart move. However, it did prevent us from witnessing the drama of the evening when the gifted author arrived at the venue, the secutity guys on the door barred him from entering. I should add that dress code is quite lacking and it would be easier to describe him as artistically scruffy, to add to the effect, I'm sure. So, with that kind of appearance combined with the fact that he'd had quite a few glasses of wine during the course of the launch, the security guys weren't for letting him in as they thought he was drunk. Apparently our novelist threw quite a little tantrum, which antagonised the guys even more. One of the PR folk saw what was going on, but only eventually sorted the situation. I say "only eventually", as the novelist had insulted her early on in the evening as well.
