It’s been a month since I and Kei officially become a couple, so today is our first umm.. anniversary? Whatever you name it then it is. And we decided to celebrate it together.
We promised to meet at 11 in the usual café, and grab something for lunch afterwards. Today is a big day and I’m so looking forward to it, because I haven’t seen Kei in a while because I was having my exam. That’s why I’m fully dressed and well-prepared.
Whoops it’s already 10.00 I don’t want to be late in this date.
I rushed to the promised place, I want to arrive as early as possible, because I want to be the first one to come and surprise him. I enter the cafe and immediately go to our favorite seat by the window.
And there, I see him, peacefully sipping his tea.
So I lose again today.
I walked to him and he noticed me from afar. “Ah Kou-chan, it’s still half to 11, you’re 30 minutes too early.”
“It’s you who come too early, Kei, look you’ve even already sipped your tea.”
“Ah umm I got too excited.” I can see his cheeks turn into a shade of red, and I pinched them.
“Look, look, you’ve grown a tomato here.” I teased him
“Mou Kou” he pouted and I laughed seeing him like that, I patted his head before I took a seat in across him.
“Have you ordered something?”
“Just this tea.”
“So you haven’t order any food, ne?”
“It’s still 11, I’m not hungry yet, and oh! I want to try eating here!” Kei sneaked his hand into his bag and took a magazine out of it. “Look, they said the food is very delicious here, so I wanted to try it.” He said it with gleaming eyes. He’s so demanding and it’s so cute.
“Ah, I heard from my friend in university, they said they have the best pasta”
“Let’s go there then Kou!”

After finishing our tea and coffee in the café, we went to the said restaurant. The place is a bit crowded, but thankfully we didn’t have to wait in line to get served. Kei ordered their specialty while I ordered something that I have never eaten before, just because of curiosity. What the magazine and my friend said are true, the food is tasty.
After that, we went to the shopping district and window shopping there. We passed by Hika’s favorite shop and it reminds me about Hika’s upcoming birthday.
“Kei, do you mind helping me finding something for Hika’s birthday?”
“Eeeeh? When is his birthday?”
“In 2 weeks”
“I don’t mind at all, Kou. What will you give him?”
“I’m thinking about buying him a shirt.. or a jacket? Which one’s better?”
“Hmmm let’s look around then.. which store should we enter first?”
“This one” I grabbed Kei’s hand and brought him inside Hika’s fave store.
“This is Hika’s fave, so this one will work perhaps.”
“Ok, let’s look around.” And then we separate ways and look for something for Hikaru.
Not too long, Kei back to me bringing a jacket.
“What about this one, Kou?”
“Too simple, Hika is a bit eccentric.” Kei then look around again.
“Then what about this one?” He now brought 2 shirts, and showing one to me.
“Hikaru told me that he despise the pattern similar to that one.”
“Hmm this one?” He showed me another one.
“Hee that one is good, Kei. Let me see it.” I took shirt from Kei and examined it closely. Indeed, it’s Hika’s fave.
“Excuse me, we’ll take this one.” I said to the shopkeeper.
“Okay sir, we’ll proceed it.” She took the shirt from me and went to their storage room.
“You know him very well, ne.” Kei said to me.
“I’ve been with him since we were children, no wonder I also know his underwear size.” And I chuckled.
“Aaah.. Sometimes I envy you two, it’s good ne having a bestfriend.. I can’t communicate well with people.. that’s why I was always alone since I was born..”
“Don’t be like that, Kei, you already have me… and Hika is also your bestfriend.” I patted his head.
“But speaking of which… Hika, he’s been weird lately. I’m worried.” I told him.

I know Kei understand what I mean. Because the time when Hika was weird, is also followed by Kei’s strangeness. The situation is already normal now, but their attitude that time still lingers in my mind. But never did I confront them about it, because I want them to tell me personally instead of me asking them. But it’s 2 weeks already, and I’m dying to know what happened between them. One thing that I know, they won’t be betraying me. But then, what is it?
I tried to make him open up to me about this problem.
“Just… weird. I always caught him spacing out and sometimes he’s getting hyped up without any reason. It’s just.. weird for him.”
“You really cared for him, ne..” Not an actual answer that I expected from him, tho… “You must be really like him.”
“Eh..?”
“I bet he really likes you too, Kou.” What is Kei talking about?
“Excuse me, sir, we’ve proceeded your order, let me show you the way to the cashiers” the shopkeeper interrupted us.
I don’t think I can get my answer now.
After buying the shirt for Hikaru, we continued to walk around the shopping district.
Honestly, I’m worried about Kei. I’m afraid that he’s exhausted already but he didn’t tell. So I took him to the ice cream shop to grab some and for us to rest a bit. We sit by the window because he really like the window view. And then I bought him his favorite vanilla ice cream while I bought myself a chocolate one.
“Kei are you tired? We’ve been walking for hours… are you ok?”
“I’m okay Kou, don’t worry ‘kay”
“Are you sure with it?”
“Yeah Kou, you worry too much, I’m as healthy as horse, look at this.” He stretched up his arm and trying to show some muscle he didn’t have. I laughed at him.
“Nice try Kei” I pinched his cheek again and then he laughed with me.
It’s good if he still can joke like that. But my uneasiness still here. He might told me that he’s okay, but I know him too much, he wouldn’t tell me even he’s already tired because he doesn’t want anyone to worry over him….
“If you’re tired, just tel me ‘kay. I’m your boyfriend desho?” I locked my hand on his head and bring him to my shoulder. “Here, just rest here, Kei-chan.”
“Thanks, Kou. You really can see me through, ne.”
“Because I love you, Kei.” I twitched his head and plant a kiss on Kei’s head.
“You’re so cheesy Kou.” He chuckled as he looked up to face me, and now is his turn to pinched my cheeks.
“Okay let’s stay here until we regained our spirit ‘kay, and then after that I want to bring you somewhere, deal?”
“Where are you bringing me, Kou?”
“To my favorite place."
We walk in rhythm, side by side with our hands linking. Our barefoot felt the coolness of the sand and being massaged by the waves. The breezes felt good, eventhough a bit salty and cold.
Yeah this is my fave place, the beach.
And this is the best scenery I’ve ever see, my fave beach, with him here.
I want to be with him forever…. if I could.
We sit by the beach and then we closed our eyes, enjoying the calm and the coolness atmosphere.
“Kimochi na..” Ke said as he tried to fix his messy hair because of the wind.
“If the pond is your fave place, then I welcomed u to mine.” And then I cover him with my jacket. Although the breeze felt nice, it’s a bit cold for him, and I’m a bit afraid he would catch a cold.
“Ah.. thanks Kou. Why do you like it very much? I want to know, Kou”
“First, because it’s not too crowded in here, unlike the other beaches. Second, the waves, somehow it could soothe me. And third… the sun is beautiful, the color it brings, orange and gold, when they met the sea, they became one, the colors combined and making the best scenery…”
“Sou desuyo.. it’s nice here, as peaceful as the pond.” Kei agreed with me.
“But, you know what Kou? The sunset is good, but I found myself liking the sunrise even more.”
“Aaand, why is that, Kei-chan?” I asked him playfully.
“When the sun is setting, I also agree that it’s very beautiful and astonishing, reddish and gold, brought the sky to be gold too, bringing its own glory. But it’s just for a while, it won’t last more than minutes. And then the sun will lost its shine, and then the dark will take over. Isn’t it scary? Losing your own light, like standing alone, living alone and lonely in the dark, and don’t know where to go…
“That’s why I prefer sunrise. The sun is so great, it could bring happiness and warmth. It’s giving people the reason to live. Sun shines through everyone, warm everyone’s body and heart, and giving them hope. When I see the sun, I see hope.” He faced me and smile, his eyes brimming of hope.
“So.. you hate the night?” I asked him
“It’s not that I hate it.. it’s just.. I’m afraid. When the dark comes, I don’t know where to go, I only see emptiness. Losing your hope is horrible. Right?”
“But for me, the night could also give us hope, Kei.” I disproved him. “Stars, not only one, but enormous. Isn’t star also emanating the light of hope? Stars guide people around in the dark. If there’s no darkness, then we can’t see the light and hope the stars offer, na?”
“A-aah…” He nodded in agreement “maybe from now on, I should learn to grow a liking to the night.. so I could also get hopes from the star..”
The sun had finally set and the skies slowly turned dark. The atmosphere also had turned to cold, I find myself shiver to the chillness, and also Kei.
“Kei, let’s go home.” And then I stand up and offer him my hand.
“Chotto, Kou, I still want to be able to see the stars”
“We can see them in your house, Kei. It’s too cold already.”
“But someone said the beach in the night is very dark, isn’t that makes the stars spark more? I also want to get my ho-“ But Kei couldn’t finish his sentence because he was interrupted by his cough.
“Ke-Kei? Let’s go home.. See? You’re coughing Kei.” I bent down to him.
“No-not yet….huk..Kou. Just a little while.. huk.”
“No Kei.” I grabbed his hand and forcing him to stand.
“Ahh okay okay I’m giving in..”
Kei finally giving in and letting me pull him until he stands up, but suddenly he slipped on his own foot which made him almost fall, if only I didn’t get him in time. He barely stand and I support him with my right hand.
And then finally the moon had finally rises and it reflected its light to the sea, which made me get a clearer vision of Kei. And it made my heart skipped its beating.
Kei… he’s as pale as white, and I can see some red stain in the corner of his mouth.
“Ke-Kei…”
“Kou…” He faced me and smiled, but not long after he shivered and his body trembling and lost his power. My right hand can’t support him anymore because he couldn’t take a hold of his own body and fully put his weight on me, which brought us almost fall together.
“KEI!” I caught him and embraced him with oth of my hands.
“I’m… okay… Kou….. huk.”
“No you’re not!”
“I’m really ok---“ but he stopped mid-sentences because he cough again, but now it’s louder he covers his mouth with his palms.
Once his cough ends, he released his hand and uncover his mouth. And then I saw it.. Blood dripping on his palms.. I looked up and found something even more horrible. Blood flowing from his beautiful lips…
I stared in terror.
“Ah.. this…. I’m sorry Kou to made you see this…” Inoo smiled again to me, and I could look how much he struggled himself just to form a smile. And the blood still continue to dripping from his smile…
I cringed.
Ever since we dated, I never know what kind of sickness he’s having. I only know that he’s weak and caught cold easily and everyday I see him growing paler and paler. I also know that he always took medicine frequently. But I never know what sickness he’s suffering.. I always tried to ask him, but he never answered me and always change the topic. So I’m not aware of this…
My right hands reach for his face and wiped the blood from him, while my left hand embracing him to my chest.
“Thank you, Kou… I wish I could see it… the hope that emanating from the stars..”
And in the next second Kei closed his eyes.
“KEI!!!”
