Little Miss Evil: an Emma Frost Fanmix
Medium: Comics
Fandom: X-Men
Subject: Emma Frost
Title: Little Miss Evil
Warnings: Profanity
Notes: I think it may be pretty obvious by now that I have a thing for Emma Frost. Although the tendency towards revealing fetish outfits are clearly an aspect of it, I think that the most important part is the fact that she’s more human than any other of the X-men. She’s not a hero because it’s ‘the right thing.’ She’s not beautiful because she was ‘born that way.’ Even her mutant powers have been something that she’s suffered for and from, rather than a natural gift. And although she is clearly the poster child for moral relativism, she does offer an insightful reminder of how you don’t have to be nice to be a good person.
In general this is an excuse to share my terrible taste in music, as usual, and use a lot of 80s and early 90's pop and rock. Taylor Dayne clearly does not have enough of a presence in fanmixes these days; Blondie and the Divinyls also have been sadly abandoned.
Also, I saw one mix where the compiler explained her reasoning for including the songs and what they meant, and I enjoyed that, so I thought I would do the same.
Black Dresses
-The Builders And The Butchers
Although the black element of the dresses may seem to be contrary to Emma's general style choices, she was clearly and repeatedly a victim of her family. Emma’s teenage years at home were pretty much shit. She was bred for power and cruelty, and she had to watch the weak being sacrificed, even her own brother, the only decent family she had.
she wore black dresses
and she never cried in the morning
she's got a bottle and a paper
so she can forget her name
Givin' Up
-The Darkness
One of the bravest things Emma did was leave home when she was still young. She was offered the crown, her father’s appreciation, his money and power, but she saw it for what it was, submission. And she wouldn’t take it. In the end it plunged her down an even more dangerous route, but she was willing to take that risk and face those dragons.
Getting off my face
There's a dragon I must chase
Honey, I'm the scourge of all mankind
And everyone but me
Is destined just to be
Slaves to the remorseless grind
Lolita
-Elefant
Am I wrong for loving Lola?
Am I wrong for what I think?
She is such a wicked child
Painted lips
Dirty knees
Lola is on the floor
She's wanting more, she's wanting more
Seventeen
-Marina & The Diamonds
You're a rich little boy
Who's had to work for his toys
You've got all sensibilities oh
Of an upper class guy
noooo, No I'm not your little slave
No I don't twist and turn that way
Only got bad things to say
Your always asking what is up, up with me
could never tell you what happened the day I turned
seventeen, the rise of a king and the fall of a queen
oh
seventeen, seven-teen
These two are really about her initiation into the Hellfire Club. She both learned to embrace the power that her sexuality gave her, and what sacrifices she had to make to do it. Emma would never admit to being ashamed of what she did because it gave her the power she was looking for. But there was no way those powerful lecherous men were going to allow her into their club without making her pay the penalty.
Suicide Blonde
-The Weepies
Lose your identity, wander in any direction
Yeah, that's the road to heaven's door
Dye your hair suicide blonde
Dye your hair suicide blonde
Forget My Name
-Danko Jones
Little Miss Evil got a way with people
She's got them under her thumb, wrapped around her finger
I get a shaky leg when she sees me staring at her
I don’t know what to do, baby I can only shiver
These two are about Emma’s personal transformation as she becomes the White Queen, the physical aspects of it, bleaching her hair, her new fetish-inspired wardrobe, and also the confidence she gains as she acquires these things. Not that Emma ever lacks in confidence, but let’s call it confidence with evidence, rather than the unfounded kind.
Back To The Wall
-Divinyls
This one is about all the things Emma has done when truly provoked. In particular, her decision to kill her sister was one that was made out of desperation. Emma doesn’t like it when people hurt her students. She doesn’t like to be threatened, and she will do whatever it takes to eliminate that threat.
You've got the upper hand
Well I've got nothing to lose
When I'm trapped in a corner like this
I might light a fuse
Don't push me too far
You better watch what you do
Rip Her To Shreds
-Blondie
Here we have Emma’s reception into the X-men. She definitely stands out, and it wasn’t an easy transition. But her aforementioned confidence serves to carry her through, whatever tortures they visit on her.
Hey psst, psst, here she comes now
Oh you know her
Would ya look at that hair
Yeah you know her
Check out those shoes
She looks like she stepped out of the middle of somebody's blues
She looks like the Sunday comics
She thinks she's Brenda Starr
Her nose job is real atomic
All she needs is an old knife scar
Jesus Christ
-Brand New
Although Emma is a very strong person, she has suffered, and sometimes she breaks: Jean forcing memories of Genosha back on her, trapped underneath the ground and facing her death by suffocation, that moment when she sees Kitty coming back for her and thinks she’s an angel and says this is wrong, I belong below? Whether or not she ever admits them, Emma never denies her sins.
Do I divide and fall apart?
Cuz my bright is too sly to hold back all my dark.
And the ship went down in sight of land.
And at the gates does Thomas ask to see my hands?
I know you'll come in the night like a thief
But I’ve had some time, O Lord, to hone my lying technique
I know you think that I'm someone you can trust
But I'm scared I'll get scared and I swear I'll try to never give up
Heart of Stone
-Taylor Dayne
As I am most definitely not a Scott/Emma shipper, mainly because Scott is Scott (If he were anyone else -just maybe female and slightly less of a douchebag- I would actually love a lot of the things they’re doing with Emma. But it’s Scott, so no.) this is my token Emily song. Emma doesn’t like to let people in, but if they get in there, whether by force or more surprise tactics, it is impossible to deny that she feels, and feels strongly. Even when she doesn’t want to believe it, after their time on Genosha, Emily can’t be fooled by the hard façade, even if it would be easier on her if she could.
I can't believe you've got a heart of stone
I've seen your tears fall when you thought you were alone
You try to make like I'm not there
To show me how you feel
You don't have to hurt me
With the hurt that you won't reveal
White on Blonde
-Texas
Although the title was too tempting to resist, the lyrics seem to be about the ways Emma doesn’t fit in with the X-men. She’s older now than when she was their enemy, and a lot of things have happened to her and the children in her care. But she hasn’t given up, and she continues to take the risk of caring for people, even though it never gives her anything but pain.
December girl feels the same
She needs to find the pace
'Cause she never looked so good when she was down
She's blonde on white, white on blonde
Her perfections are now gone,
reflections everywhere
Hot for Teacher
-Dillinger Escape Plan
This one, I believe, is obvious.
I think of all the education that I missed.
But then my homework was never quite like this.
Got it bad, got it bad, got it bad,
I'm hot for teacher.
I got it bad, so bad,
I'm hot for teacher.
:D
