Gah. Had to leave a comment because, well, no substantial comments on this seems to me a bit criminal. This is brilliant, heart-wrenching, beautiful... The glimpse of how they could have been, without their pasts to weigh them down is just, well, warm and perfect (Emma's snark, their gorgeous daughter, their playful, unburdened banter), and it's just staggering how keenly you make us feel both the idyll of the illusion and the heartbreak of the reality. And *of course* Emma would deny herself a real shot at happiness and perceive that denial as sacrifice. I loved the way you prefaced it -- an encapsulation of your understanding of their relationship -- and it was just amazing to have each word ring especially true from there on out.

All your work just blows me away. I swear I've never been so captivated, so invested in the dynamics between two characters, and I know a lot of us say this, so I hope you realize just how rare and wonderful a thing you've created. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I'm with Anonymous on this - I've always loved this pairing and yet, had never thought about the possibility of the two of them until I read your work. kudos on this little gem - it's gut wrenching and heart warming all at the same time.

i love that you continue to write this pair - they never ever get old!

I'm feeling overly sensitive cause your story almost made me cry. What a sap I am! Well while I've got you I wanted to let you know that I think the whole "m'ma" thing is super cute. I assume that your intention was a cross between Emma and Ma in a shortened kid type of way, but if I'm wrong then there's still no convincing me otherwise for I will always see "m'ma" as a combination of the two. Oh, I'm also getting into your "City on the River" storyline, (I held off until I ran out of other material of yours to read, and then I realized that I like it too. Big surprise there...not!) I'm glad that you are a writer *sigh*, you give me sweet landscapes of imaginings.

I personally think this is pretty heartrending (especially if you think what would be likely to happen if Didi never shows up.) But I cried at the end of The Devil Wears Prada (the book) so I should not talk about whether something is worth crying about.

Your assumption about M'ma is indeed correct. I could be nerdy and say that it is clearly a holdover from a very highly ranked 'Onset' (that is, that kids prefer syllables that begin with consonants.) But it's rather mysterious that she has included a syllabic 'm'. (Is it weird to say that I ran this by my linguistics prof and she said it sounded plausible?)

I'm glad you're getting into City on the River, because that's the only one that's actually coming along for me right now. Something actually might happen in the next chapter! And eventually there will be sledding.

Enjoy your landscapes. :D

This is my first time commenting on your journal although I've read most of your emma/emily series on ralst.com

I've just discovered your journal and cannot believe the amount of emily/emma fics that you have! They've definitely become a favorite pairing of mine. This piece was brilliant, and I would agree that, in its brevity, it is able to reflect their relationship well. The last few lines were heartbreaking but so telling of Emma's character. I'll definitely be reading more from you!

Yay! My advertising campaign is working!

I can't believe the amount of fics there are either. It is mildly disgusting, particularly since i have bits and bobs and whole other segments like this one that I have been sitting on for 8 months.

I'm glad you're reading! Thanks for commenting!
