I liked the whipping scene. Her strength of will, determination, and pride show well here. The detail regarding tensed muscles is spot on. Most people get it wrong and seem to think that relaxing is the key. (This is not a car accident people. This is repeated trauma to the body. Totally different physical reaction from a single, abrupt, occurrence.) Especially if the intent is one of malicious harm, rather than as a form of play, one must be hard to persevere.

I'm glad that she had JJ to tend to her. I'm imagining what would become of Emily if she had only herself. It's not pretty.

...and I like how you captured the reactions from the "sheep".

Obviously Emma was hurt about earlier that morning. I can't wait to see how that conversation will go. As well as the consequences of Emily's whipping.

It's always good to know if i'm getting the details right. (I'm working off of a couple of novels about the navy and playing Rugby, where blunt force trauma is always less painful if you're prepared)

Loved this chapter. I especially enjoyed the Emma/Emily bits. The awkward interactions and Emma's reaction when she saw Emily are perfect.

I have to say that this is by far my favorite entry in Emily's Notebooks. The way you portray everyones' actions and feelings towards Emily is fantastic, but even better is Emily's reaction to them, the way she holds herself even in front of them in a situation as bad as getting whipped is sheer genius. Can't wait for more.

I. Hate. Aaron. God, poor Emily.. That was completely uncalled for, whipping her thirty-five times over the maximum! Still, I'm impressed that she was able to take all forty without breaking.

I can't wait to see Emma's reaction when she finds out what happened! Very poignant chapter!

Wow. this part was intense. Im not sure how you have managed it, but you have manged to get Emily in character, changing because of the universe she is living in, but still keeping what makes her her, like not wanted to scream in the whipping. Please *please* update soon!
