Inside/Outside

There were some things that never changed about Emma Frost.  Her clothes: white.  Her hair: bleached.  Her breasts: fake.  Her nose: carefully rebuilt every time it took a hit.  Not that Jubilee had a problem with this.  She had tried to make it in Hollywood, and women there had a tendency to change cup sizes once a week.  It was important to know who you wanted to be and do whatever it took to become that person.  That was what Jubilee had learned from her teacher.  It was good advice.

And that was the one thing Jubilee had never expected to change.  Frosty knew who she was.  She knew what she wanted.  And she never showed an inch of doubt when it came to getting it.

At first Jubilee hadn’t noticed the difference.  Frosty was just as intensely collected as she always was, criticizing her, but lightly, treating her like an adult, who wasn’t a complete failure.  It was awesome.  It was exactly what she had wanted from a teacher whom, against all odds, she couldn’t help but respect.

Then Jubilee met Emily, standing by the bar, slightly awkward, tension visible in her shoulders, but with a wide honest grin and an easy sense of humor.  At a glance she and Emma were perfect opposites, but in another way they were the same: both closed off, both alone.

It was hard to watch, the way they felt around each other, too aware of the battlements and spiked gates that guarded them both.  They could slip in through the backdoor if they wanted, but too often it was taken as a sally.

Jubilee recognized the look in Emma’s eyes when she watched her.  It was need, but carefully locked inside, unasked and unanswered.

It was the saddest thing she had ever seen.
