You know how we Americans are, we have no issues with unfurling the flag and waving it in everyone's faces while shouting USA USA USA at the top of our lungs. Every two years we get to do this somewhere in the world when our athletes participate in the Olympics. Believe it or not America, but it's actually considered rude to show too much national pride, especially when in someone else's patch ... not that that ever stops us of course.
Our neighbors to the north, Canada have a more global approach to things than we do, they understand that too much national pride is gauche as hell and act reserved when it comes to such displays. That changed this week being the hosts of the Olympics, and knowing their southern neighbors would have no problem waving American flags on their turf. Enter a plea from the Canadian PM:
The Canadian Prime Minister had to go before Parliament yesterday, and urge Canadians to engage in what he called “an uncharacteristic outburst of patriotism,” saying, “Don’t be afraid to wave those flags. We’ll apologize to the world for our immodesty later.”
You can't get any more Canada than this. That's the difference between Canadians and Americans. We both have national pride, but only one of us knows that they're no better than everyone else. Americans have never been modest, and how we're seen around the world is evidence of how our immodesty is taken.
I love you hard Canada, never change!
