Miracle in the Garden

Aug 01, 2009 10:12

It's going to be 100 degrees again today so any gardening I wanted to do needed to get done this morning. Lughnased is Wednesday and I'm happy that harvest time is in full swing in my little vegetable patch.

While I was weeding this morning a hummingbird flew right up to me and hovered in my face for a more than a few seconds before flying away. I've never had a hummingbird fly in that close before so it was rather awe inspiring. I wondered later if I was blocking it's way to something it wanted my garden. Idaho has more varieties of hummingbirds than Michigan and the little guy who flew in my face this morning was much bigger than a rubythroated hummingbird. I need to get out my bird guide and look it up.

Some pictures of good stuff.

Picking green beans now. I still have green beans from last year's garden in the freezer. All of the main heads of broccoli are in the freezer but the plants will produce little florets until it freezes, which means I get to eat fresh broccoli until November. Have fun paying premium prices for it at the grocery!

This tomato is getting nice and big but unfortunately it's wedged between the support and main stem of the plant. Should be fun to get out of there when it's ready.

And the best for last ... drumroll please ...

I mentioned in a previous post that my onion seedlings croaked in the terrible hailstorm we had back in early June, well guess what, while I was hoeing this morning I almost stepped on this poor little thing. An onion survived! It's pretty small and straggly but I'm going to give it a fighting chance. Who knows, I may get to enjoy an onion I grew myself this season.

Anyone want some lettuce? I'm going to bag up everything I pick tomorrow and take it to work on Monday because I can't eat it all myself.
