in the news...

Well, since I'm not really getting anywhere with the trusts stuff today (having finished the essay that was supposed to be done by yesterday this afternoon), here's a few links to some news stories that I found interesting (mainly from the BBC site).

EUROPE

- An interesting speech by Barrosso, the Commission President, on the 25th anniversary of Greek membership of the EC: here

- The future of the Constitutional Treaty to be determined by 2009: read more

- Economic dangers of absence of political integration? see what some analysts think

RUSSIA

- Chechnya holds Beauty Queen contest: read more

- Gay Rights rally broken up by police: read details

Typical. When the mayor of the capital of a supposedly democratic nation states that 'homosexuality is not natural', you know that nation has a long way to go towards proper democracy and human rights. I mean, fair enough, he may think that privately: everyone's entitled to their own opinion on the subject, like any other. But when you're a state official (arguably the third most important man in the country, after the President and the Prime Minister), why shouldn't you be tolerant and pro-free-speech, etc? OK, so there's a risk of clashes; well then, allow both sides to express their opinion, plan for two marches, channel them in a way that they're not likely to actually clash...

UK

- Prescott under fire again, this time from Labour MPs, and partially because of playing croquet: read more

- Heathrow to be phased out?!? the possible plan [but see "See Also: BAA to shut Heathrow Terminal 2 (27 Mar 06)" - how would this make sense: shutting Heathrow when they're opening a new Terminal 5, and thinking about building a new 30-million-capacity terminal?!?!]

- Woman 'too large to be cremated': see here. And they deny there's an obesity problem...

ENVIRONMENT

- Germany expands use of wind power - but does that make sense? read more

- Gore documentary aired in Cannes, ex-VP urges world to wake up to climate change: see here

That's it for now, folks. Happy reading!
