So, here's a quick update about the Japanese O-Furo (bath), since everyone was very curious!
The knob on the left is the temperature knob. The knob on the right toggles between the showerhead and the faucet.
As I learned the hard way, make sure to turn the o-furo on with the power control above the tub area, or you will never get hot water from the tap! (Fascinating to me)
You can use this as a shower, by placing the showerhead in the higher bracket... or you can use it to rinse off with while you sit on the seat.
You can also do things more traditionally by filling the basin with water from the faucet and dumping it over yourself while sitting on the seat.
Regardless of your method, you need to wash off before you enter the bath part (o-furo ni hairu) because everyone shares the same water.
They have some shampoo. They told me I could use it on my very first day... well I forgot to take my own shampoo in with me one day so I used theirs. It's amazing!!! I don't even need conditioner and my hair is SO soft. It says it has Tsubaki oil in it... I think the US needs to get in on this tusbaki oil stuff, it's freakin' awesome. Of course, I have no idea what else is in the shampoo... but wow, I'm impressed!
