Work

I work in a busy call center setting up returns and exchanges for people and helping the really technologically challenged folk figure out what a motherboard is and what memory looks like and prescribing parts for different systems. There are about 20 people in my group right now and the managers have decided to make it a competitive environment hoping it would cause all of us unmotivated, disenfranchised people to work harder. We are measured on how many calls we take, how many e-mails we answer, how many interdepartmental issues we solve, and our overall index. I had the highest index (40) all week. What's more is that no one even came close to that - the next highest was 28... and I'm not all that fabulous, so I'm wondering what is wrong with the other people in my group. Do they just not work? Do they bullshit with the customers about the whether? I could care less what the whether is like in Cincinnati or Buffalo or Edmonton Or Tokyo.
I'm beginning to wonder if it is good customer service to tell a phone customer that your ex-boyfriend is in jail for beating you up, as one girl does all the time, or that you would love to try the Jam they say they made for Christmas... I'm beginning to think I'm dull because I don't converse with my customers about little trivial happenings or about the ensuing war or about what Idaho is like or about how I know someone in their town or... about the whether.
