here Hankyung sighed and rolled his eyes at the sight of Sungmin running around the house, screaming, “Santa’s coming! Santa’s coming!”
At thirteen years old, Hankyung knew better than to believe that an old, fat white man with a bushy beard goes around the whole world, delivering presents to kids who have been good for the year at the span of one night. He wanted to tell Sungmin that the man doesn’t exist, that he’s nothing more than a fictional character, and that the presents Sungmin receives that are marked “from Santa” were really from their parents. Hankyung couldn’t bring himself to take the happiness out of the little boy’s eyes, though, and so chose to keep quiet. He sat in the couch and watched as Sungmin ran back and forth, squealing and giggling.
“All right. Time for bed,” said Hankyung, standing up to collect the hyperactive boy.
“Aww,” pouted Sungmin, but allowed Hankyung to take his hand and lead him upstairs.
Hankyung laid Sungmin down on his bed and tucked the young boy in, but found a hard time in actually getting him to sleep. “Just close your eyes and you’ll be asleep in seconds,” he sighed.
“But,” protested Sungmin, “I want to be awake when Santa comes! I wanna see him!”
“Didn’t you know?” said Hankyung with a mischievous smile on his face. “Santa doesn’t come until he knows you’re asleep. So you need to have your eyes closed, tucked tightly into bed, and snoring your butt off before he even thinks about coming into the house.”
Sungmin quickly closed his eyes and pretended to be asleep. Smirking, Hankyung ruffled the boy’s hair before getting up and heading to his own room.
Hankyung was sound asleep and was sure he was having one of the best dreams of his life when he felt someone tugging on his pants. He swatted at the intruder, trying to bring back the dream that was quickly fading when he felt someone hit him hard on his stomach, accompanied by, “Hyung!”
Gasping, Hankyung opened his eyes to find Sungmin standing beside him, eyes wide with excitement. “What?” Hankyung grumbled, more than a little annoyed at the disturbance.
“I heard something,” the small boy whispered, as if afraid that someone else would hear him.
“What?” Hankyung tried to keep the frustration out of his voice, but he was tired and sleepy and just got woken up in the middle of the night.
“I heard something in the roof. I think it’s Santa. He’s here!” Sungmin jumped up and down with a huge smile on his face and looked like he was desperately holding in his squeals and screams.
“Go back to sleep.” Hankyung rolled over and faced the other way, pulling his blanket over his head and trying to ignore the little boy beside him.
“Hyung!” Sungmin tugged on his shirt and Hankyung gave up on any hopes of getting sleep while his younger brother was on his Santa high.
Letting out a sigh of frustration, Hankyung sat up and stared at Sungmin. “Fine. It’s Santa. Now, shouldn’t you sleep so he’ll come into the house? I told you, he won’t come in while you’re still awake.”
Sungmin’s mouth formed a perfect “o” and he looked thoughtful for a moment. Then, with a smile on his face, he jumped into Hankyung’s bed and snuggled under the covers with him. “I’ll sleep with hyung tonight then!”
“Fine,” Hankyung agreed, desperate to go back to sleep. “Just stay quiet and close your eyes. And don’t move so much!” Sungmin stopped his squirming and kept his eyes tightly closed.
Hankyung was asleep once again and, miraculously, his dream had returned, when he felt a finger poking his face, once again accompanied by, “Hyung!”
Opening his eyes, Hankyung didn’t bother trying to mask the irritation in his voice when he replied. “What?!”
“I think he’s gone,” whispered Sungming, either not noticing or not caring about the anger in the older boy’s voice. “I heard him leaving.”
“Then go back to sleep! Your presents are gonna be there in the morning.” Hankyung closed his eyes and desperately tried to go back to sleep.
Sungmin tugged on his shirt. “But hyung! Let’s go outside and look. Maybe we can see his sleigh flying away.”
Letting out a quiet yell of frustration, Hankyung threw his blanket off and got up from his bed. Dragging Sungmin by the hand, he hurriedly threw a jacket on himself and his brother before heading out the door. “There! You happy? He’s gone. Now can we please go back inside and can you please go to sleep and let me sleep too? It‘s freezing out here.”
Sungmin pouted, clearly disappointed that he missed sighting Santa and nodded his head. He followed Hankyung back in, dragging his feet in the snow. The two headed for Hankyung’s room and the older boy was much too tired to tell Sungmin to go into his own room. Hankyung was finally able to sleep undisturbed, although his wonderful dream never came back.
The morning found Hankyung frantically running around the house, looking for his younger brother. Instead of being by the Christmas tree, impatiently waiting to open his presents, the youngster was nowhere to be found. His parents had yet to wake up and he didn’t want to give them a heart attack, on Christmas of all times, because he’d lost his younger brother.
“Sungmin? Where are you?” He called out quietly in the house, not wanting to wake up his parents. “It’s not funny! Come out. Please?”
He threw the doors open and ran outside, hoping that his brother was just playing around in the snow. Finding no one, he began to get scared. What was he going to do? He felt tears forming in his eyes and called out for his brother.
“Hyung!”
Hankyung looked around him. He heard Sungmin’s voice, but the young boy was nowhere around.
“Over here! Hyung!”
His eyes following the voice, Hankyung looked up to find his brother standing on the rooftop. Hankyung felt a brief bout of relief before heart-stopping fear took over. “What are you doing there?! How’d you get up there?! Get down now!”
“Come here! You need to see this hyung!” Sungmin wildly gestured for Hankyung to come to him and Hankyung, afraid that his brother would fall any second, looked around for a ladder.
“I used the ladder in the backyard. Hurry!”
Running, Hankyung made his way across the house and into the backyard, climbing the ladder steps as quickly as his body would let him. “You are in so much trouble when I get up there! Just what were you thinking?”
Reaching the final landing, Hankyung stared at Sungmin as the boy was practically jumping for joy. “Look, hyung! Look! I told you he was really here! Look!”
“Okay, Sungmin. Just stay there and I’ll get you. Don’t move. Okay?” Hankyung moved closer to the young boy cautiously. The roof was slippery due to the snow and he was thankful that Sungmin hadn’t slipped and fallen.
“No, hyung! Look! He was here!” Sungmin desperately gestured for Hankyung to look at something.
Sighing, Hankyung took his eyes off his brother to look at what he had been pointing at. He froze in his spot and forgot why he went up to the roof in the first place. He looked up at Sungmin’s face and saw his brother’s smug smile before looking back down. A smile spread in his face and he shook his head. “I guess you’re right. He was here. Now can we please go back down, before we get in trouble?”
Nodding his head, Sungmin carefully went down the stairs first, Hankyung following behind. Looking behind him, Hankyung could still see the sled marks on the top of the roof.
