31 Days of Spider-Man #24: Fun with Covers

Aug 28, 2012 05:09

I’ll admit it. I can be a sucker for clever comic covers. Sometimes it’ll be just a really good design, like Alex Ross’s Green Goblin that I mentioned way back in entry #6 or the more recently showcased alternate persona covers for Identity Crisis . Other times it’ll be something flashy like the holograms from the 30th anniversary issues (entry #20).

Yet what I really love is when a cover belongs to a set that creates an overall theme, or does a nice parody or homage.

Let’s look at the original appearance of Spider-Man, Amazing Fantasy 15.

In the 50 years since, there’s been some pretty fun nods to it.

Another classic “first” cover was Todd McFarlane’s work for the first issue of the “Spider-Man” title.

A year later, the title saw something familiar

And it would pop up again.

During the storyline “The Other” Mike Weiringo created a slew of variant covers for all the the different costumes Spider-Man has worn over the years., and even brought the design back for the Iron Spider debut.  Next time I have time to hit a comic convention and peruse back issues at various dealers, I think I’m going to try my best to get the complete set of Weiringo’s covers.

Cover art can be one of the best ways to sell to a reader, so you can't help but enjoy it when the art team knows how to remember a comic book's roots, but still provide something new.
