A good number of the stand alone stories I’ve brought up in these little write ups I first encountered in a collection titled “The Very Best of Spider-Man”. I’ve referenced or discussed, the Spider-Man origin, the final chapter of "If This Be My Destiny", "The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man", and "The Osborn Legacy", all of which are some of the stories contained in this collection.
Many of these stories are great glimpses into the spirit of Spider-Man style. Guilt, determination, and some clever fun are all covered.
Some stories, like "Whatever Happened to Crusher Hogan" might not hold a lasting effects on the greater Spider-Man lore, but are just fun romps. They remind the reader that it's not always supervillains and inner demons for Spider-Man, but sometimes it's small challenges and little things that make a big difference.
The collection is up there in age, but still easy to find on places like amazon. I actually need to replace my copy as pages are starting to fall out of the bind due styles to a multitude of readings. I've yet to find a better collection of Spider-Man stories that manages to run such a full gambit of styles, emotions, and art of decades of the webslinger. The title "the very best" may not fit as a title to award to the stories within, but rather as an indicator of the elements of what makes good Spider-Man stoties.
