You have been misled. A semi-automatic firearm fires *one* round per compression of the trigger. Anything that fires more than that is fully-automatic. What you are thinking of are fully-automatic weapons on burst-fire mode. The ATF defines any gun that can be easily modified to be fully-automatic or any part to modify a semi-automatic to be fully-automatic to be as heavily regulated as any fully-automatic firearm. Thus the semi-automatics that are readily available are purposefully designed to be difficult to modify to be fully-automatic without a machine shop and quite a bit of experience. Anyone with said machine shop and experience could build a fully-automatic weapon from scratch

Bleh. I know little about weapons. Anyway, the point is that nobody needs certain types of weaponry. I'd be all for banning guns, except that that would leave the public without guns and criminals with them. Criminals should just take up martial arts and swordplay, so that people don't need guns. ^.^ (Yeah, I know, that will never happen. But it would be cool.)
It's a very big thing to get a Constitutional amendment repealed. Just about as big a thing as getting one passed. I'll bet it'd be even harder to mess with the Bill of Rights. On the other hand, "arms" does not mean "guns". Just as long as some arms are allowed, the lawyers and politicians could say that people are free to bear those. Unfortunately, very few good-quality melee weapons are being produced nowadays, but you can get a kukhri for about 25 USD.
Ah, but look at the UK. They've gotten their gun control. It didn't work. So, they're moving on to *knife* control (which includes swords). The knife control hasn't gotten too draconic, but give 'em time

And, as unconstitutional as it is, the current restrictions on fully-automatic weapons are actually fine with me, with the exception of the 1989 thing.
