Synopsis

Mar 03, 2010 00:05

This past weekend, a good friend of mine, Philippa Ballantine, organized a charity auction to help out another friend of mine, Tee Morris, who lost his wife this past January. The auction was to raise money for a trust fund for Tee and Natalie's daughter. People from all around the world who're into social media (Twitter, Podcasting, V-Casting, etc.) came together to donate items, services, etc. and then to bid on them. The Boom Effect Auction raised over $8500 in a ten-hour on-line auction.

My hats off to everyone who donated and bid on stuff.

Well, being friends with Tee, I had to throw my hat into the ring. I won two auctions of which one was an opportunity to have Tee and Philippa's agent review and critique the first three chapters of a novel I was working on. This isn't just a high-level thing but a line-by critique. I thought, what the heck, I may never get a chance like this for a review before I actually go out on submission with Steel on Target.

Heard from the agent today. While I've been polishing up the first three chapters waiting to hear from her, she also requested a 1-2 page synopsis of the story. This way, she's familiar with the story and can get a feel for the characters and know who they are before she starts reading.

That's perfectly reasonable.

Except, I hadn't even started the synopsis yet.

So, dear readers, guess what I've been doing this evening? You've got it, writing the synopsis of Steel on Target. I'm trying to be sparse with the wordage and cut it down to the bone, but hey, this is me. I know I'm going to go long on the first draft. I'm too used to doing chapter breakdowns for my media work because the synopsis/breakdown is how you sell the story before you actually write it. So, I guess I'll just let it flow and then take the butcher knife to the document after I get it finished.

So, technically, I'm writing on Steel, even if I'm not progressing on the story per se. Hopefully, I'll get the draft finished tomorrow night and get all of this off to the agent soonest.

Now, where did I leave that whetstone for the knives?
