I have been a horrible, unresponsive, friend lately. And for that I am deeply sorry. I want to try to play catch up with people soon. I'm sorry!

This might not work, but in order to try to start getting towards my goal of learning Finnish, I'm going to try to post a Finnish word a day here. This may expand to Spanish and Japanese as well. I'm not sure.

But the word for today:
Aloittaa (Links have definitions and audio clip)

Okay, since I missed mother's day, I'd like to do a belated meme I"m sure was around here somewhere

10. Udonna, Mystic Force

So some people might go...'wtf' but, hear me out. She was a woman who did what she had to do, carried on. And then she acted as a mentor and mother not only to her niece but to those entrusted in her care by proxy. I think she's a wonderful example of those mothers who aren't necessarily blood.

9. Kim - Miss Saigon

Incredibly tragic, but a woman who stood by her heart and did what she had to do to protect her son and give him a life he deserved at the sacrifice of EVERYTHING even before the play's end. She deserves props.

8. Cate Cassidy - Life Unexpected

Okay, now she's certainly not a model mother. In the least. But the point is, she TRIES. She becomes the best mother she can while becoming a better person herself. She takes responsibility after she gets a second chance from a time when she couldn't.
7. Mary Winchester - Supernatural

Okay, not only is she a kick-ass character in general, but she is a mother who stuck around and was dedicated to her family and children even after she was gone.

6. Mrs. Brisby - The Secret of NIMH

She is one of the most awesome characters, EVER. Period. BUT, her quest is fueled by her family. Thus. Awesome mom.

5. Sarah Hawkins - Treasure Planet

I have a huge soft spot for single mothers. Maybe because I have a single mother in my life. But This woman is a FIGHTER. She survives her husband just taking off, and works her tail bone off to try to help her son stay in a life that he can thrive in despite their circumstances. And sure maybe she's not 'successful' but...how many mothers would also let their 15 year old son go off like he did because it was so important to him?

4. Molly Weasley - Harry Potter

Okay, I'll be the first to admit that she should probably be higher. She's an AMAZING character all around. Probably also one of the best mothers. Period. But she's at four for reasons I can't completely explain, even though she is the definition of kick-ass mom. All around.

3. Eureka - Eureka Seven

Now she isn't necessarily my favorite character on this list, but she gets the number three spot for a couple of reasons. One, we don't see mothers as signficant characters, let alone as ones who aren't used for gags, very often at all. Not only that, but this is a TEENAGE girl who has her own set of weights on her shoulders. But she takes in these children and treats them as her own--because they need her. Even through all of it they really are her central focus. In an age where there are far too many young mothers, while I know ths is a fictional character, I think it's a good testament to the human will/heart.

2. Den Novotny - Queer as Folk

Okay, she and Molly might be switched. But, this was a single mom who had a very interesting situation to deal with. She is the core of her family. She truly is the rock for not only her son, but her brother. She's there for an entire subsection of a community she doesn't 'belong' too. She becomes like a second mother to Justin when he needs to get away from his home. And what's more, is we see her trying to learn how to become a woman and not JUST a mother. And I think that's a message a lot of mothers should see. You give us so much. Your happiness is important too.

1. Caroline Ingles - Little House on the Prairie

Sure, the show was campy and typical of its times. But even when I was a little girl I remember thinking how frickin' AWESOME she was. I think Molly took lessons from her. She always had an answer, a smile. She knew how to run her household, call her husband out on things, and stand up to neighbors...even the more annoying ones, with a grace that just isn't found often.
