Personal Journal Entry: New Directions

I have decided for the moment to take things moment by moment. There is no immediate way to open a Gate home, and since Luc and Sarah have disappeared--the only informed mages I know of--so I must accept my circumstances as they are. I have been trying to get to know the locals--in part to know who is skilled in what, in case of attack, in part to learn who is trustworthy. And in part to make friends. The last I am not good at, but I do myself no good sequestering myself and pining for friends and family I have no access to.

My attempt to find mercenary work has not been very profitable, and I do need to still earn my keep. I've traded some of my embroidered work for some items and potch at the trading post. But I don't want that as a sole means of support--it's relaxing, but too much so for long, and as I told Master Lepant, it's nice to have one skill I use purely for hobby.

I am most comfortable with a blade in my hands, so I have thought about offering lessons. I think I am skilled enough to do that. There may be no takers, but it's a thought.

As an aside: it IS interesting that the common trade currency is the potch, just like on our world. That would suggest Wanderers have been here at some point, to do trade. Perhaps not HERE here, but elsewhere, or in the past--enough that the potch became the universal currency for people who did not have local coin or bar to trade. Of course the few coins I have on me are an entirely different mint than what they have here, but it is at least convertible.

I have sparred a little and spoken with the Knight Alenia. She is a talented swordswoman, but it's obvious something troubles her. She seemed more at peace with herself the last time I saw her though, so I hope she is sorting out. It sounds as though she has had a difficult past, which from what I have heard about the politics of Falena, is not difficult to imagine. I hardly know her, but I find myself worrying for her. I think she reminds me a little of Fredegund, less in personality but in... in the way they seem to become frustrated with themselves.

I would like to speak to Alenia's Queen, Arshtat. I'm curious to hear about her land from her perspective. I have not seen her about, and am not sure she would be forthcoming (any more than I might be about certain political issues in Astrasia). As far away as it apparently is,

I have also spoken a bit to a man named Wyatt, who offered to take me to the nearest city, Vinay del Zexay. That is something to chew on. He has a relaxed demeanor, but the way he carries himself, he has obviously seen battle. I've also spoken to a gentleman named Nash, who was nicely carefree to speak to. There are more soldiers and warriors here that I've also made acquaintance with, and hope that if something happens here we will be able to fight alongside one another honorably.
