This is so unbelievably smooth compared to its first incarnation. I like that - and this element was always present - you don't explain anything about Damien. We know he lives in Oxford, that he smokes, and that he's friends with Graham (though that might be seen to change, the way this chapter ends!). You really chuck the reader right into this bizarre event with very little exposition or preparation; it's extremely unusual to find such suddenness in writing (that's a compliment, by the way)!
This is a rather random point, but I'm surprised Graham smokes around his books - given he's supposedly a booknerd.
I love the description we get upon Damien's first entering Graham's (work?)room, though - with your prose, it's really easy to picture.
“Damien, you absolute bastard, when will you ever learn to knock?” - Great line!
"elaborately-lined circle" - This confused me a little, since circles are only one line - do you mean it's decorated with extra lines, or has lines inside it, or something else?
Anyway, great entrance chapter. We're straight into the action. More, please! :)
