White Road discussion - spoilers ahoy

May 27, 2010 11:15

Soo, I hope nobody minds, but since the book's been out a couple of days now I figured it would be safe to post a long spoilery discussion. Because I just finished it, five minutes ago, and I NEED TO TALK ABOUT IT. Please, someone take pity on me.

MAJOR spoilers for White Road. Also, long and rambly. Sorry. )

I just finished about three minutes ago, so I'm so glad this post was here :)

I agree with you on almost all points. I really did think Micum wasn't going to make it, so when I got to the end of the book and he was still there...I squealed. Just a little bit.

Overall I really loved the book, thought it was better balanced than Shadows Return (I liked Shadows Return better once I reread it, but I still think it was a kind of odd little interlude in the series.) I didn't think there was any lack of romance, though. I think it's just a more settled relationship than it started out, but there were lots of little moments between the two of them that made me smile.

Some of my hopes for this book, which I guess are now my hopes for the next book, are:

Thero/Kila. Please please please. I want that dragon bite to let them have little wizardy babies and be in love and be adorable. Just me?

Beka. Where are you Beka? I miss you.

haha so I totally didn't read the last sentence of your post before I hit reply. Fail. But I'm glad I'm not alone on that :)

Haha, more win than fail, I think. Great minds think alike! XD Yeah, it has to happen. I don't think it will be easy, but I still hope it will come about, because there have been hints about things heading in that direction for a while now - not just Thero/Klia, but also Klia taking the throne, etc. Phoria really needs to go live on a rock somewhere, kthx.

I think that's a good summary of Shadows Return: kind of an odd little interlude. I love it, but I don't think it sits quite right with the rest of the series. White Road grounds itself in Classic Nightrunner a lot more. :P

Oh, yes, I do love the comfortable, settled feel of their relationship, and I think there's a lot of implied romance in that. I just wanted some more kiss scenes, is all. :3

Come back, Beka. And bring Nyal with you.

Sorry for butting in but I have to agree on the Thero/Klia point and the dislike for Phoria. Those two are fabulous together. I loved their little moments before. I also just happen to think the two have good common sense, unlike Phoria. They're good at knowing what actions are not just good for now, but also for the future. They also don't let pride and misplaced suspicion get in the way of their decision making, usually. Am I the only one who thinks the war would be going differently if Phoria wasn't leading the charge? I think all her little 'trust' games are making the war more difficult than it needs to be

NOW I'm even more desperate to read.
(Book's not in Germany yet. My bookstore will see me again today.)

(But I'm relieved neither Micum nor Sebhran died. Latter one was on my list... since... well... me and beloved characters.)

Hmm... I've pre-ordered it on amazon over a year ago, so I've already got it yesterday.

I wouldn't even try buying it in one of the local bookstores because they don't have it anyway... maybe that's the problem, did you order it there?

I ordered it back in december. ;___;
But the Big Trader, that supplies amazon and the Germa book stores tells: "In two or three weeks."
Same is on amazon.

T___T

At least if you don't do an overnight order. (never figured out how this works. For this they's need books in storage. Still they tell me they don't)
But I already payed the 6,90€ - so I have to wait.
When it finally arrives I'll surley savour every single letter.

Okay, so I'm just going to warn people ahead of time that I may start to ramble and make no sense. With that done, on we go ( ... )

I think you're right about the Hazadrielfaie coming back in a later book. Although this particular story arc was tied up, there were still things left unsaid and unsettled between them and Alec, and I felt there was a definite opening left for future storylines that concern them. And Alec still has to see Ravensfell! :3

Really interesting idea, that the final battle represented a struggle between Illior and the Mother. I hadn't thought of that at the time, but I can see it now that you've suggested it. If the Retha'noi are indeed likely to keep after them, then that's another storyline opening for future books and probably something else that could involve the Hazadrielfaie. I'll be interested to see if anything like that happens.

The moment Thero got bitten, I knew he was going to eventually have to have little wizard babies with someone, and that someone being Klia would be seriously perfect and spell out many great things for Rhiminee and Skala as a whole. I do think that we aren't finished with the Hazad or Sebrahn. I feel the war will probably reach the north due to Phoria's dumbness and the Overlord's...overlordness, and Alec and Seregil will have to warn them. Or, maybe the Retha'noi relations will weaken due to the fight along Tamir's road, and the Hazad actually send for help. I really feel like we'll see some political games in Rhiminee before heading up to Ravensfell in Summer Players. In the Nightrunner series, I find I am not fond of the Retha'noi, but in TT I really loved Lhel. Also, while I feel like a lot has been focused on/in Plenimar over the course of the series, I sort of feel like I want to see what Plenimar is like for "normal" Plenimarans...not the Overlord, or marines, or nutty alchemists and dragorgos...
