I'm going to ramble a little about my creative process. If that kind of thing is of no interest to you, plz 2 b skippin' kthx.
Last night I typed up a rough outline for a story I'll be working on once my commission is done. Sure, I've had this commission awhile now, but work has been keeping me from doing much with it but jot notes. I mentioned before that the basic premise behind this next story is 'Sleeping Beauty' with some plot twists. I'm thinking it'll be the first person narrative of the prince that awakens Sleeping Beauty. He's recently come of age in his kingdom (named the Dale. I don't know why, that's what it decided it wanted to be called). Now he needs to prove he's a manly man. In order to do so, he must either slay a dragon or marry a princess. Since all the dragons have gone union and the damsels have declared they can take care of their own distress, thank you, he's pretty stuck.
It's at his 21st birthday party that he hears the story of a maiden that's never been rescued. Her tower lies in the wilderness, filled with dangerous magic. The prince wants to be normal in one respect--already he's unusual in that he often sees people for something other than they are, and has dreams of a time and place that don't exist. Prior to four years ago, he remembers nothing about himself aside from having an accident and being thrown from his horse and hitting his head. Yet at the same time he remembers there being broken glass in his face and flashing lights. There's definately nothing like that in the Dale as far as he knows.
So he sets off to find his princess, dimly aware that somewhere in the mix, the evil fairy queen could be watching and planning his demise. Basically, if you've seen something like Pan's Labyrinth (and if you haven't, for shame), it's about the main character going from the real world into a fairy tale progressively. For once, I wanted to try something different--have the main character go from the fairy tale world into the real one. There's a little more to it than that and I have some details worked out, but I think explaining it here might be a little overwhelming right now. I'm also not seriously writing the thing for awhile so some things might be subject to change. I'll be fitting some classic fairy tale motifs in there, like while in one world, the main villain is the fairy, but in the real world she's the prince's stepmother making his life miserable, things like that. Progressively, the prince goes from being in a fairy tale to remembering the real world more and more, and his life in the real world. He coexists in both, basically, but with some differences. In the real world his parents and two older sisters died a long time ago, while in the fairy tale world they're alive and well. In one world he likes vanilla and in the other, chocolate. Some differences.
I just need feedback on the idea behind it. Does it sound good, or would it work better if it had the main character(s) going from the real world into a fairy tale, the way most movies and other stories do it? I've seen that a couple times though, and for me it seems like it's getting cliche. I wanted to try something different and I want it to be different from similar ideas other people have tried. Of course I won't know that for sure until I actually do a better outline and start writing, but that might be a long time coming.
Does it sound interesting or kinda meh? Just some feedback there if anyone's got any, thanks. :)
I also have done more on the sekrit, but it won't be done until probably Thursday when I have the whole day to dedicate my time and attention to it. I don't want to be too sloppy with it, after all. ;)
