Over the weekend, I polished off Catherynne Valente's
Palimpsest, a strange and magical tale of a strange and magical city of the same name. I had been transporting myself there chapter by chapter, as I shuttled back and forth between home and work and other destinations on my home city's public transport system. It seemed appropriate. Several times, I came very close to missing my stop, I was so blissfully wandering the streets and alleys of that other city.
If you like unusual words strung together like burning jewels, look no further. If you wished, hoped, prayed, and believed there was another world a shadow's width away from ours... there is. Palimpsest teems with life and dazzles its visitors with esoteric rites and lavish observances that set the city of wonders apart from the everyday world. It is rich, heady stuff. Here be dragons, etc.
So, what are you still doing here?
