in Greek and Roman mythology, a monster in the shape of a dog, the offspring of the giant Typhaon and the serpent-woman Echidna guarding the entrance into Hades, and described by different ancient writers as having three, fifty, and even a hundred heads; usually portrayed with three heads and a serpent's tail, and with serpents around his neck.
