Four for the End

It was over. It was done.

Four teens stood shoulder to shoulder in a circle, watching the people around them. All around the hall, the wounded were being tended to, and the weight of the silence of hundreds of people with nothing left to say hung in the air.

These four stood apart from the rest. They were untouchable. The three were to be expected, but the blond standing with them was not. But he had been there as well, demanding to be allowed to fight with the others. All but one had been denied.

Now they stood together in a corner of the hall, watching the others with a detached sense of accomplishment. They hadn’t lost anyone, and that was a miracle. But three hadn’t been able to do what they wanted, and the fourth had done something he had never wanted to do.

They each knew what the others were thinking about. Remembering the flashes of light and the harsh cries. Green and red and purple and silver and blue and dozens of explosions, and yet they had lost no one.

As one, the four looked up at each other. Their eyes held the same emotions, the same fears, the same realisations. They saw their own suffering and vague relief in the eyes of each member of their small circle. And they realised something. That grey was not always cold, just as brown was not always dirty. That blue was not always sad, and green was not always for death.

It was over. It was done.
