Also, regarding your new friend: no, it won't get better or easier immediately. But it will get better eventually. I don't know if you mean he lost his wife to divorce, or to death, but my grandmother lost her husband (my grandfather) to death in a horrible way many years ago, and although it has continued to affect the rest of her life, she had a wonderful 18-year relationship later and got to have many wonderful experiences throughout the rest of her life.

I don't know if this kind of thing would be helpful for your friend to hear...maybe? Regardless, please remember that you aren't responsible for saving his life. Hopefully he will come to his senses, but if he doesn't, you've been there for him and that's as much as you can do.

She lost the battle with cancer about three years ago. He's gone through a whole mess of shit that would have beaten most people down. I'm hoping he'll make it past the holiday season and can see some light again, but in the meanwhile, it's rough on him.

If I can get him to talk to me (he's deleted pretty much every trace of himself on the net), I'll definitely pass that along.
