So what CLAMP canon should I know to enjoy XXXHolic/Tsubasa? And is it really worth it getting into X/1999? Opinions are appreciated.

You must get into X/1999! It's one of my favorite series. The art is just beautiful and I love the story line. It's so worth it.

I trust it gets better after the first volume, then? Because that one pretty much left me too confused to really bother picking up number two...

You have to really pay close attention or you'll miss important plot details.

X/1999 is a good series if you love angst and are willing to re-read five or six times to catch all the details and get everything straight in your head.

I wouldn't think you'd need to know any other Clamp canon to follow xxxHolic/Tsubasa. They're all in different universes anyway, so none of the same rules apply as in the original Clamp series.

But it would be more fun if I can fully appreciate the gigangic AU/crossover aspects, right? Or maybe that's just me.

Yes. Very much yes. And yes again.

Personally, I find it fun, but I also think that it would still be a great series even if I didn't know anything about any of Clamp's other manga/anime.

xxxHolic doesn't have as much crossover as Tsubasa - at least, I don't think so. I'm woefully behind on the xxxHolic manga.
