I am on page 285 of Eleanor Catton's The Luminaries, and I am putting it down. I can't finish a book this long (830 pages) when I haven't been given a reason to care about a single one of the characters and have absolutely no interest in why any of them is doing the things they are doing or behaving the way they are behaving. I have no idea how this won the Man Booker last year, but then I have no idea how Connie Willis (a writer I have loved in the past) won the Hugo in 2011 for her two-parter Blackout and All Clear.

So instead I am reading Gary Shteyngart's memoir, Little Failure, which, so far at least, is awesomely good. This is really surprising to me, since I've never really been able to appreciate Shteyngart's novels and short stories. And yet this, a memoir of his childhood and young adulthood, is simply amazing and a delight to read.

Anyway, and so it goes, and blah blah. :D
