And then fate sent us in different directions, and I lost you. I think that's the line where the weight of House's solitary journey finally hits the reader. It does me, every time.

Their characters just shine in this, and I love the little mentions of New Orleans and how Wilson's wife didn't want him, House's stint in the prison and how he still doesn't eat right. And the bond of true brotherhood that runs through this is just so touching. It's lovely work, possibly your best yet.

Wow, this is brilliant. I love the "canon" details.

Thank you! It's always a delight to work little "real details" into an historical AU -- it feels like hiding Easter eggs for readers to find.

I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Thanks again for reading and commenting!

Reading this felt like being outside after a brief rainfall - wet and clean, in a way that's not refreshing because it feels like there should be more. The restraint you know to use is great, and when there is emotion and closeness, even in this way the two men have now, it's right for the piece. Lovely to read.

Thank you, Hannah. That's exactly what I wanted this to feel like -- a cold splash of water that doesn't slake a deep thirst.

I am so happy that you liked this. *hugs*

I learn so much from reading your notes!

And this is a beautiful piece, Nightdog--I adore that Wilson stays, or that House keeps Wilson along in spite of his knowledge that Wilson isn't there. And Corgigirl' line--And then fate sent us in different directions, and I lost you.--oh, that gets me every time, too.

Aw, thank you, Perspi! I really hope the notes don't come across as me being a pedantic asshole -- I just like to share the cool stuff I learn. For some reason, this discovery of the transport agents and the work they did just really struck me. I knew that House would do this, and I literally had to put the book down and write it before I could continue reading.

*hugs you*

No, no, not pedantism at all! (I don't even know if that's a word, but if it's not, it should be.) It lends all kinds of authenticity and atmosphere to the tale, to let your readers also read the background stuff, I think.

Maybe pedantry? I'm not sure if that's a word, either. Hee!

But yeah, for some reason I think other people are going to find the background stuff as interesting as I do. *grins*

I adored this right up to the end, and then I hated it. But with sincere admiration XD

Sadly, pretty much all I know about the Civil War = Gone With the Wind (what?), but the historical basis of this was so very interesting and colourful. All the little details were compelling. Also, loved the reconstruction of their first meeting, just because. But the entire thing was brilliant.

Hee! I love being hated with sincere admiration! *g*

And thanks! Actually, I think the picture most people have in their minds of the Civil War ties directly back to Gone With the Wind, and that includes Americans. It's such an iconic depiction that everyone knows it.

Also, if you read the comments in this slightly earlier version, you'll see there's the slightest possibility of a (happier) sequel. ;-)
