Chapter One
Detective Olivia Benson was forty years old when she died.
What had started off as a perfectly normal day very quickly became a terrifying nightmare, which ended in Liv laying on the sidwalk with a 9mm slug lodged in her abdomen. She had never actually contemplated what death would be like, which was surprising due to her profession and the recent passing away of her mother; but she had never in her wildest dreams imagined the cold. She was frozen to her very bones, her skin so numb that she couldn't even feel Elliot's hands as he roughly pushed away the soaking material of her shirt and applied pressure to the enormous hole in her stomach.
"Olivia?!" Elliot's voice sounds fuzzy and distant, almost as if she's got cotton wool stuffed into her ears.
Turning her head in the direction of his voice, the whole world tilted drastically and she found herself closing her eyes desperately against the wave of nausea.
"Elliot?" she whispered, her voice bubbling wetly from her lips.
"Just keep still." He pulled off his shirt and used it to press against the wound. "I'm trying to keep the blood in."
Covering his fingers with her own, she raised her right hand and stared at the blood which covered it.
"Not doing a very good job."
He gave her a weak smile and then looked down at the shirt now soaking in blood. "No I'm not. Just hang on, dispatch has got a bus coming for you."
"Don't think its really going to matter."
Tears were filling his brown eyes, spilling over to run unbridled down his cheeks. In that moment Olivia knew that she loved him, after all he was her rock the one constant in her world that hadn't given up on her. It wasn't sexual nor even romantic love, not that it wouldn't have worked if they had tried, instead it was something far deeper and burned into her very soul. No matter what was on the other side she knew that she would miss him, that his absence from her existance or whatever it was would forever be an ache that could never be fixed.
"Don't you dare go and be all defeatist on me Liv," he hissed.
"I think I'm being a realist." The coppery taste of blood filled her mouth, a sure sign that she was slowly bleeding to death and that no matter how fast the paramedics drove they wouldn't get here in time.
"Yeah," he whispered.
Placing her hands back over his, Olivia pryed his fingers from the shirt and intertwined them with her own; it didn't really matter now how much pressure got applied and she needed the contact at this moment.
"This is it partner." Rising his blood soaked hand to her lips she kissed it softly. "Thank you."
"Olivia!" she knew that he was shouting but his voice seemed even further away than before.
A single image filled her mind; it was Alex Cabot sitting at her desk with her reading glasses pushed down her nose and a tiny smile on her face as she gazed down at her paperwork.
Then there was darkness.
*
Darkness.
All there was in existance was darkness, painfully endless as it stretched out through all of space and time.
Olivia was there, though in what form she wasn't entirely sure. The only thing that she was sure of was that there was no heaven and no hell ...just this nothingness. However she wasn't alone, there was something in the darkness, prowling around at the edge of consciousness.
"Hello?" It surprised her to hear her own voice echoing around her.
Whatever it was moved closer, and she could hear its wheezing breath almost as if it was standing directly behind her.
She had never felt fear quite so potent as this, so close that she could taste it.
Without warning there was an ear shattering screech and a single name filled her mind.
'Jack Harkness.'
Then the darkness bled away into blinding light, swirls of red and blue that surrounded her, until she hit the ground hard and blacked out.
*
The sky was overcast and there was deathly cold seeping through her clothes and into her skin. Pulling the torn and bloodied pieces of her shirt over herself, Olivia pushed herself up in the mud and stared around.
From the looks of it she was in a park somewhere. A somewhere dark and rainy.
Racking her mind she desperately tried to remember how she had ended up here in tattered clothing and in a place she didn't recognize. Terror, icy and horrifying shot down her spine as the truth of it hit her.
She couldn't remember anything.
