"Wannabe" by the Spice Girls was released on this day fifteen years ago. I was seven-going-on-eight. Shortly thereafter I went bananas. For about three years I stopped breathing air and started breathing spice. Spice anything: stickers, Cadbury chocolate bars, that game where you pretended to be the Spice Girls, Candie's platform shoes, the playground rivalry with people who liked the Backstreet Boys more (get out, you traitors!), the movie, their brand of feminism which, in retrospect, is hilariously weird on eight year-olds, Geri leaving (omg the devastation!). It was a good time to be a little kid looking for role models. I definitely benefited from the experience.
Fifteen years and I can still remember everything, including all the words to this song.

Also since I was basically THE PRIME DEMOGRAPHIC for the Spice Girls I have a really hard time imagining a world without them or that ~three year period of mania. What did people older than me do when they were seven? Listen to the radio? What did kids younger than me do? What do kids do now? It's a mystery to me.
