Another day, another cherry broken. I have listened to my first podfic. And not only my first podfic, but the first podfic of my fic. A few months ago
ekbatana/
jennacorinth (that's right, right? You're both?) asked for my permission to record
Static for
podficbigbang and I said yes.
And it's amazing. That feels weird to say because it's my story. But it's sort of not? Listening to something you wrote is a completely different experience than reading something you wrote. But this isn't about me. The only thing I brought to this project is the word yes.
ekbatana did all the work and deserves all the credit.
Here's a rough timeline of me listening:
00:01:30: Mortified, as I am afflicted with the kind of embarrassment squick that has only two branches: interviews and fan interactions of celebrities and audiobooks read by actors I know. This is not quite the second but I am listening to something I wrote oh god.
00:01:30-00:14:35: Mortification ebbing but still feeling sort of oh god this is the worst story ever. Also getting used to
ekbatana's lovely accent (everyone is Scottish! It's oddly charming and a bit hilarious). Also I can hear when she smiles, which is totally cool. Super aware of how often characters say, "Jesus."
00:14:36-04:06:03: Totally captivated. Like, had to go to the store but listened to it in the car and in the grocery store captivated. Mad I had to have dinner with my family captivated, even though I know everything that happens in the story, all the things that didn't happen, the things that almost happened.
04:06:05: Really sad that it's over, but still thrilled, full of maniacal pleasure.
All in all, an incredibly cool experience. Probably not the quite the same as reading a story you didn't write, but I imagine it's close. And you get the bonus of seeing how that story you've written comes through someone else. I feel so lucky
ekbatana picked my story for her big bang and she did a fabulous, awesome job. Check it out. Now! The power of zombies compel you!
