Title: Lost and Found
Part: 1/3
Pairing: Jonghyun/Taemin
Rating: PG-13
Summary: In the SHINee household, all is normal, until one event changes everything. In that time, Jonghyun discovers that the things that they hold dear can easily change for the worse. But though things can be lost, they can always be found again, and sometimes the experience is worthwhile in the end.
A/N: Not like my usual fics XD its a bit darker and more tragic I guess ^^;; It's split into three parts, here's the first!
The day I mustered up the courage to tell him my feelings, was the same day that he suffered something terrible.
I remember it very clearly. The bright sunshine filtered through the window into the room. We were all awake by then and had been walking around, doing whatever we wished. It seemed like a normal day; Kibum went out for an hour or two, while the other and I had fun before we went to go practice. The practice was a lot of fun too, and went well. We returned home safely, and were just relaxing before dinner.
And that's when it happened.
Taemin had gotten up from the couch and stretched before heading to the bedroom. “Coming, hyung?”
I nervously nodded, because I had told him that I needed to tell him something in private. Motioning for him to go ahead first, I told the others not to interfere since this was important. It took a minute to convince them - mainly Kibum because he was so determined to know everything that was going on - but then I was ready to go confess to him.
And then the house went eerily quiet as a loud, sickening thud was heard.
For a moment, everything was still, and no one moved. But we all felt the darkness of dread grip our hearts. We all knew in the back of our minds what that sound had been.
When we ran into the bedroom, fear and worry sent everyone into a panic.
Because we were right. Taemin. He had been the cause of the sound, and was lying on the floor unmoving, blood soaking the floor beneath his head.
He's dead, is all I can think as the others hurried forward. He's dead and I was the one who caused it.

To my - and the others' - immense relief, Taemin had fainted from exhaustion and stress, but wasn't dead.
I stayed by his side the entire time he was in the hospital. I wouldn't let anyone make me leave; not the doctors and nurses who were concerned that I was going to get ill from not eating or sleeping well, not the others who insisted that me being there at all times wouldn't help him like I wanted it to.
The pale coloured walls of the hospital room and everything in it became as customary to me as our own household, but definitely not as comfortable or reassuring. And I found that time passes slowly when you're just counting the minutes until someone you care about returns.
No, I wouldn't leave. Not even when the doctor told us that Taemin would probably wake up soon, and would be his usual smiling self, ready to go practice as soon as possible. But those words did comfort me a lot. Soon things would be back to normal.
What I didn't know at the time though, was that another tragic event had yet to happen.

The next day, his brown eyes blinked open for the first time in what seemed like ages, and gazes around without talking. But I couldn't keep quiet any longer. “Taemin!” I exclaimed, leaning close to him with hope etched into every part of my demeanor.
“Y-Yes?” He replied in a hoarse voice, looking intently back at me.
The relief had almost made me cry out and hug him tightly. Taemin, our innocent maknae was alright, was alive. But my happiness was short-lived, because his face was devoid of any emotion, as blank as a clean sheet of paper. His eyes held nothing but small annoyance and great confusion.
“Who... are you?”
The doctor had lied. This was not our Taemin, not the same person I had been waiting for to wake up. Because though he looked the same, sounded the same, he was not the same.
For he had lost his memory.

The doctor told us he had feared this might happen because of the fact that he had hit his head on our wooden drawers when he had blacked out. I had to physically refrain myself from screaming at him. He hadn't told us that before! He waited until it happened to tell us it was even possible?!
“Will he... Will he get it back?” Jinki asked, voicing the question that had been on all of our minds as he looked up with red rimmed eyes.
The doctor shook his head and replied honestly, “I don't know,” He then told us that Taemin might, after a while, begin to regain his memories of his life with SHINee, or he could simply not. “Maybe it's for the best. Trying to force him to remember could make his mentality unstable and it might be better to--”
“Be quiet,” Kibum said, his tone dark and empty. “We're not giving up on him.”
The man nodded curtly, and then left us to go to another patient. Left us to stand at the door to Taemin's room in sorrow-filled silence.

We were all able to go back home later that very day.
While in the car, manager told us what we were going to do. No one would find out what had happened, everyone would pretend that nothing had. He was going to talk to the people “higher up” and make sure that we had some time off, and during that time, we would try to help Taemin regain his memories. Said boy agreed to this solemnly, with disbelief carefully disguised in his features.
Once home it was already late, so we decided to go to sleep. I was glad that manager had gotten someone to clean our room; I didn't want to see the blood stains from where the one I loved had hurt himself, and I doubt any of the others disagreed with those feelings. Before we were allowed to climb into our beds however, Kibum got an idea.
“Taeminnie?”
He raised an eyebrow at the nickname but turned to look at him questioningly.
“Do you remember... which bed is yours?”
The hope that he would was slim. He had just woken up, and none of us expected him to know this. And Taemin proved us right, because the bed he pointed at belonged to Minho.
“Close,” The tall boy murmured encouragingly, but the other frowned. “Yours is the one like mine; bottom bunk, but of the other bed.”
We all went to sleep that night with heavy hearts.
