Every States Favorite Son
Out of all our country’s great leaders of the past the 35th president of the United States, John Fitzgerald Kennedy will have the greatest impact in are country today if he was president. John F. Kennedy is my favorite president for various reasons from his class to his moving speeches. As are counties youngest president he has always fast tracked through every task and job he was assigned. Unlike many who earned there title through past family member contributions and family status. The Kennedy’s were a mild political family. His great-grandfather, Patrick J. Kennedy was a well known state senator known as the “political boss of a ward in Boston” (World Book, p260). Also his Strong Irish heritage and military service allows me to connect with him and better relate with his hard working mentality.
The main qualities that make a president successful then are the same now. Key attributes such as charisma, without doubt JFK had at large the communication skills need to be a successful politician. From the issues with the Cuban missile crisis his skill allowed him to demand things from communist countries. Along with the progress he made with arms control, having multiple countries sign a treaty to ban atomic weapon weapons test in the atmosphere so harmful fall out does not affect the populous (World Book, p266). From the words of a master diplomat “Let us never negotiate out of fear. But let us never fear to negotiate” (World Book, p 268).
Intelligence, A man with the brains to back up his brawn makes a very effective machine. When he graduated from Choate Academy at the age of 18, John was voted “most likely to succeed” (World Book, p 261). After this foreshadowing of his future political success JFK moved on to college scene at Harvard University. From there he started his graduate studies at Stanford University’s school of Business but he soon dropped out six months later. Then he enlisted into the Navy holding the rank of Seaman. Like every brave Sailor he applied for sea duty shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor hearing the nations call for bravery. As he was assigned to a PT boat squadron, soon he learned to command one of these small crafts then was commissioned to an ensign rank after finishing his training. The military would be the end of JFK’s formal education. He would hold many different jobs in the navy which would gain him a broader knowledge base such as report for a newspaper and being an instructor at military hospitals (World Book, p261). Learning the skill from these trades formed the backbone of the political animal we know today.
John F. Kennedy as been voted one of America’s most popular presidents from his “high ratings in public opinion rankings of former US presidents” (Wikeipedia, JFK). His Youthfulness added to his happy, die hard family personality, Along with his military achievements to back up his honest charm. After saving his fellow Soldiers and leading them to safe on an island, during World War II on the Pacific front (World Book, p262). Thereafter he used his communication skills to persuade the islander’s to find help on another island (World Book, p262). This earned him the Navy Medal and Purple Heart for being wounded during the sinking of his PT boat (World Book, p262). Clearly John F. Kennedy was honest and cared about his country and his men, else he would have never have joined the military especially when he had no interests in politics during that time. “The Kennedy’s had thought [he] would be a writer or a teacher” (World Book, p262). Kennedy’s drive would prove himself in Navy and in office many times over. The Army first rejected him because of his injured back then the Navy took him with some “influence [from] the director of the Office of Naval Intelligence” (Wikeipedia, JFK). Through out his life he would be on many different types of medications for his injuries, which wouldn’t stop him in his career and usual kept this from the public eye.
John F. Kennedy’s career began with becoming an Navy Officer graduating from the Naval Reserve Officers Training School and Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron Training Center then was promoted from Seamen to Ensign (O-1) (Wikeipedia, JFK). After leaving the Navy he worked part time as a news reporter. After his brother died this is when Kennedy began to think about politics and ran as a U.S. Representative and defeated his republican opponent by a large margin (Wikeipedia, JFK). In April of 1952, Kennedy ran for a Senate position and with the help of his family he upset Henry Cabot Lodge by 70,637 votes (World Book, p 262). Then in the 60’s he would carve his way to becoming the president. “His Good looks, wealth, and attractive wife has made him a popular subject for newspapers” (World Book, p263). This glamour aids him to overcome his political disadvantages such as his religion and maturity. Once on the debate floor the nation seen how he handled complex issues and situations, then his maturity would rarely be questioned again (World Book, p268).
Coming back to the modern era choosing which president would be the best fitting for the 2008 elections. During Kennedy’s time the many complex and touchy issues. But the biggest issue is are country’s mood, during are time we stand divided on issues and other types of civil matters. Kennedy with his youth would bring back a new fresh feeling in this country away from the Bushes and Clintons sway.
Issues such as the Iraq conflict would be nothing new to him. During the Cuba Missile crisis this issue of an “threat of nuclear weapons being launched from close distance” (Wikeipedia, JFK). Like then, the Iraq situation needs to have something done about it else a major threat that can grow whether it be national security or another dictatorial leader rising to power. Along with the complex issue of same sex marriage like the civil rights which lead to an “turbulent end of state-sanctioned racial discrimination was one of the most pressing domestic issues of Kennedy's era” (Wikeipedia, JFK).
To conclude if Kennedy would be brought back in to our time and was reelected for president, he could bring a bran new spice to our country. His art of persuasion would reform are country back in to one. Along with bring closure to are many pending issues that many politicians run from and plan to pass off on to the next president. As see from the words in his book. “A Party can live only by growing, intolerance of ideas brings its death” (Profiles, p13). This is a man who talks from experience; from here it’s up you, who has your vote in 2008?
