I swear, I didn't stay in New Orleans. As tempting as it was, we did, in fact, decide to come home.
The wedding went well, with far less wedding-drama than I was told to expect. In my mind, it's really a blur. I vaguely remember getting my hair done, I think I was in a kind of stupor. We got to Gateway Island, I ran back into the bathroom where everyone was. I had a shot or two because my hands were shaking and my head was spinning. I got all laced up and ready to go. Jes gave me her mother's ring to wear, but it was too big and I was afraid I was going to lose it. Lydia was so kind as to make a small adjustment and viola! It was stitched (and easily removed from) inside my corset. I carried her next to my heart the whole ceremony, and I'm sure she was there with us. I never got to know her as well as I would have liked to. The ceremony was beautiful, the food was incredible, and all in all it was a great day. I can't wait to get the pics next week so I can remember some of it, lol.
The reception went well, the cake was a HIT. Even our photographer said it was one of the coolest cakes he'd ever seen. We should be able to go pick up all our engagement/wedding photos next week.
New Orleans was awesome on a totally different level. We saw a Voodoo wedding, we got to eat at Cafe du Monde several times. We met an intriguing man who we know only as "Michael in the black cowboy hat in front of the St. Louis giving tarot readings". He gave us both a pretty in depth reading, grabbing things that he really shouldn't have had any clue about and weaving them together to make sense, and give a little advice. The only reason we sat down was because when we asked what it cost, he told us to just pay him whatever we felt it was worth. After the two readings we only had 30 on us, so we told him we'd come back by the next day when we had more cash. He smiled, shook our hands, and said okay. The next morning when we went for breakfast we saw him out there setting up. Chris walked over and gave him another ten and he slipped Chris something very special; it was one of the stones he had on his table that he used to hold down the cards on windy days. You can tell it's well loved and worn. He told Chris to keep it with him always. We have it on our little altar. It's green and half
We walked our happy asses all the way down to St. Louis Cemetery #1 to see Miss Marie LaVeau's tomb. It was a bit confusing at first. The place is like a maze, and we passed several different tombs with the symbolic XXX marked on them, with offerings around them. We did finally find the large white tomb marked as hers. We left a few things at each stop we made, but we spent a little more time with Miss Marie than we did with the others. We got to go into a fully functional voodoo temple as well. Let me tell you, if you've got a tiny ounce of something psychic in your body, you can feel the energy in this place. It was incredible. The man who ran it told us that the other tombs are of other voodoo doctors or mamas (priests and priestesses). He was very interesting to talk to, though I could barely hear half of what he said.
In more recent news, I'm about to take my test for my state insurance license. When I have that I'll finally be able to start at the funeral home with the preneed funeral insurance. I'm so glad the company has had so much patience with the wedding and the training and the testing. The testing has had a few hitches, but I should be able to get it done tomorrow at noon. Woohoo! It's going to be a good thing to have, because even if I can't work through the funeral home, I'll have a lot of other doors open now.
And for now, that's going to be it. Feel free to post any questions about the past month or so in a comment and I'll answer them, lol. I've just been pretty busy as of late, and am in the process of kicking a sinus infection's ass. Ginger ale and augmentin, here I come!
