I continue to be amazed at the stupid confusion of some drivers when it comes to police traffic directors and escorts.
Example #1: Going to and from church on Sundays there are police traffic directors to keep traffic flowing smoothly on Blankenbaker. Note to drivers: when a cop is motioning *emphatically* to continue even though the light is red, that is your signal to GO...the cop will not give you a ticket for something he told you to do.
Example #2: I live very near an Arch L. Heady funeral home, and it uses the same route I do to get to Calvary Cemetary and Bellarmine. Today, on my way back to work, I got stuck first in front of, and then behind a funeral process of eight cars with two motorcycle police escorts. They get the right of way, so at each traffic light, one or both cops would ride into the center of the intersection to stop traffic and motion the cars at the light with the procession to go through the light. Again, when a cop is telling you to run a red light in order to get out of something's way - do it! This one really bright lady decided to try to pull to the side of Shepherdsville Road, I suppose to get out of the way, but there is no shoulder, so she basically stopped in the middle of a lane, STILL blocking traffic.
I see news stories occassionally that involve an emergency vehicle colliding with a civilian vehicle, and this no longer surprises me. Don't get me wrong - the emergency vehicle may not always be right (in fact, a classmate from high school was needlessly killed by one who was very, very wrong) but I would imagine that if everyone knew what to do when they spotted emergency flashing lights and didn't act like they'd never driven before, some of those accidents could be avoided.
Think smart, people! :) Have a blessed day!
