Mixtape Exchange. Original prompt was: Songs from Merlin's iPod that Arthur secretly loves listening to, and one he put in there himself.
This went a little differently than I had planned, but I still like it! :)
Opposites attract, they say, and Merlin thought he and Arthur were probably in the encyclopedia next to that entry because boy were they opposites and god did they attract.
They'd had to make the choice more than once, though- work out yet another compromise, or give up and break up.
They were currently at 138 compromises.
Merlin had never been happier.
Music was something they'd agreed to disagree about early on, and they took turns controlling their soundtrack. That didn't mean, however, that when it was his turn Merlin enjoyed forcing Arthur to listen to music he didn't like. So he started paying attention to the songs Arthur tapped his foot to, or hummed along with, or sang parts of days later.
He began putting them into a playlist, which he named after the first song to make the cut: the appropriately titled You Made Me Like It by the 1990's.
The others were as follows:
2. Again and Again -- The Bird and the Bee
3. Hey Man (Now You're Really Living) -- Eels
4. Jigsaw -- Mates of State
5. The Sound of Settling -- Death Cab for Cutie
6. Annie Waits -- Ben Folds
7. More Adventurous -- Rilo Kiley
8. Sweet Caroline -- (as performed by) Guster
9. The Way We Get By -- Spoon
One day Merlin opened the playlist to find a tenth song had been added- Bounce That, it read, by Girl Talk. Merlin stared at it quizzically; he knew it was a song from Arthur's collection- one Merlin actually liked (pop music as used in small, clever doses was something he found he enjoyed). Merlin clicked on it, and the familiar beat made Arthur look up and grin.
"You're not the only one who's been paying attention," he said. He flashed Merlin a smug look.
Merlin grinned, swayed once to the right, and got back to his history reading.
Clicking on the picture will take you to the playlist! :)
