I'm at work!

And I'm not usually allowed to hack around the interwebs while I'm at work, but I'm going to make an exception today - because I'm alone ( Read more... )

The word 'awesome' is only good when it comes from someone I know who thanks me for doing an awesome beta job, for being an awesome person, or tells me this week's ep of QI is awesome. In short, familiarity is the rule.

But for someone to tell me a book I haven't read is awesome, that tells me nothing. I wouldn't even look at it, let alone buy it. 'Awesome' is used as a copout description, when someone can't bother to do any better. If I owned a bookstore, I wouldn't allow it. Either say something helpful in a cogent fashion or say nothing at all.

I'm a right bitch, aren't I?

No, no, I did ask for opinions! :) The thing is, all the other ladies at work (including my boss) like these recommendations of mine, but I'm starting to have second thoughts about them because I'm not sure the audience/customers will get them. But then again, if a customer comes up to me and asks for a suggestion, then I'll really go to town and start talking about this book or that, telling them all about why I like the characters or the plotline, the style/language and so on and so forth. I.e. why they should read said book. But these little tags only have two lines on them, and they're about three inches wide, so there's not much room to write.

Meh. I've managed to conflict myself now ^^

I do feel like a right bitch. I know what kind of cards you're talking about now. It's just that awesome doesn't tell me anything. Is there any way to get a few more words on the card?

Something like "Nonfiction about global warming that reads like high adventure!" or "Dense, thrilling mystery with nonstop danger" would be helpful to me.

I'm sorry if I've offended you.

Not at all; I don't take offense at people telling me what they think :)

I have been known to write (of Wodehouse) "Loveable characters, charming language and a wonderfully amusing plot!" or something the like; I could squeeze a lot onto those cards if I wrote a bit smaller. But then again, English not being the first language in this place, I should just write the recommendations in Norwegian. Which would be boring :/
