Yesterday (Saturday 10-08-2005), I, and hundreds of other high school seniors in my area, got up at 6 AM to take the first of the new SAT.
When I got settled into the appropriate room, we were about to begin. The proctor asked us if we had all taken the SAT before, and most people raised their hands. She decided that since we have taken it before, she is not going to read the instructions and rules (which, to my knowledge is required to be read for all standardized tests). Noone complained because we wanted to get it over with.
Everything was going well, I was completely focused, and I wasn't getting fed up during the test like I did last year (last year I didn't take my medicine). My only concern was time. While everybody was on the english section, the girl beside me was typing on her calculator. I thought that since she didn't get in trouble, it was okay to go backwards. So during section 4, I finished a little early and went to section 3 to see if I could finish some of the questions I skipped. As soon as we were about to start section 5, the proctor came towards my desk told me to stop, take my things and leave immediately. She accused me of cheating.
As I was leaving the building in tears, I handed my test booklet and answer sheet to the main guy who was wearing red pants. I explained to him that to my knowledge I did NOT cheat, the proctor did NOT read the rules and instructions, and I did NOT know that we weren't allowed to go backwards. How was I supposed to remember the rules from last year. Besides, this is the NEW SAT, it is different from the first one. It is imperative that she reads the introduction. The guy told me to exit the building and call my dad to come pick me. Without complaining or arguing I did as I was told.
After crying for about 10 minutes, I got the confidence to go back and ask the guy in the red pants to throw away my test, or do something so that it would not go on my record that I cheated on the SAT. He sympathized with me and said that he would write that I left in the middle of the test because I got sick. I was perfectly fine with that. He told me not to tell anyone what had happened.
I went back outside to wait for my ride, and within 5 minutes the guy with the red pants comes out and asks me if I would like to finish my SAT in another room. Ofcourse I said yes.
After everyone was finished I asked a couple of my friends if their proctors read the directions, and they all said yes.
The guy with the red pants saved my life...I am eternally thankful for his understanding, and I am not going to let that proctor bitch get away with not reading the instructions. This is the most important test of every high school student's career, and unproffesional mistakes by certified proctors should, and will, be reported.
