It has been a quiet Sunday evening. Nothing truly worth remembering except for the black cat camped out on the patio and the falling squirrel of vengeance. The dogs are quite on edge right now. It still seems like a quiet Sunday evening but now everything is different.
I had stepped out onto my patio to put back what the gusty wind from this weekend had overturned. Good thing I did not let the dogs out with me (they deemed it too cold outside anyway) because as soon as I stepped out, Black Mama Kitty ran out from under my wind-blown tablecloth. She did not run far but she sure surprised me. I looked but there were no kittens under the table, a good thing since I would feel responsible for them. Black Mama Kitty watched me with eyes that calmly told me 'Hello, I am not afraid of you". I gave her my regards, straightened the furniture and tablecloth, and went back inside. As I lowered the blinds on the door, so the dogs would not see her and get all riled up, I saw the cat slinking back onto my patio. I think it must be the red cushion. A haven of luxury for small wild creatures.
Then I sat back down on my couch when there was a scratching at the door. The dogs went nuts but I figured it was the local Chinese place putting yet another menu in my door. The dogs whined and whined. I decided to take them out to sniff around to let them know nothing was there. Harnesses on, they bolted out the door as if they were the front runners of the Iditarod. Nothing there. Not even a Chinese take-out menu. I let the dogs get their sniffing in and got them corralled back at my door. Suddenly a squirrel fell from two stories and landed two feet away from me. I gave a little shriek thinking someone had thrown a shoe. Honestly, that was my first thought. The squirrel was dazed and lucky that the shock of its fall also shocked my dogs. Once I realized what it actually was, the dogs had tore after it, me running after them, squirrel gone up a tree in an instant.
Suffice to say it took me a lot longer to convince them to go back inside to settle down. Cricket decided to whine by the door for a few minutes and now has curled up on her pillow. She is still on alert. Me? I am trying to get back to writing, procrastinating by writing this post, and also wondering if I should paint my nails. Maybe I should call my mom...
