On the serious side, I'll address the "why do things happen" line first. I myself am a big proponent of free-will. Things happen generally either because people have made them happen, or because they just do, I dont beleive God personally controls the minute day to day functioning of the universe. Thusly I dont agree when some people say that God personally decides to drop trees on people, or to have them die in a car crash, I think these relate to humanity's God given free will. Only truly exceptional circumstances can be put down to divine intervention in my opinion (shit like a car getting hit by a semi-trailer and one person being thrown clear, and sustaining no injuries against all odds, while the car, and the other occupants are turned into a fine paste).
"Why are we here". Thats a tough one. I dont know. I dont even pretend to think I know. I am of the school where-by we must discover for ourselves why we think we are here. I reckon the goal is to decide why you want to be here, and go for that. I like the idea of making the world a better place, so maybe thats why I'm here, I would definately like to be able to point to someone, or a group of people on my deathbed and say "them, I made their life better". I would like that. Dunno if thats why I'm here, but I like the sound of it, and thats about all I reckon I can expect to know.
Pesky deep and meaningful questions, always get me thinking...
