WTF

I'm going to review the Japanese movie Cure today. It's what I like to call a WTF movie. I realize that Japanese movies are more subtle that your typical American film, and that Americans are sometimes criticized for their need to have every single thing in a movie spelled out for them. I'm not usually like that. I enjoy foreign films and I like to interpret their meaning for myself. I don't need to be hit over the head with everything. I do, however, like movies to at least make some sense. I hate to admit it, but I just didn't get this one.

The premise is simple enough. There are a series of murders going on, all commmitted by different people, but they're all being committed the exact same way. The people who are committing these murders have no explanation as to why they committed them. A police detective who is investigating comes to the conclusion that these people are being hypnotized somehow into doing it. Things get kind of murky after that, and the ending made no sense to me at all. I even investigated and tried to find out other people's takes on what happened, but none of their explanations made any sense to me either. I dunno. It kind of frustrates me that I don't get it at all. I'm usually pretty good at figuring these things out.

If you enjoy WTF movies, then I guess you should check it out. If not, then don't!
