Another warm, breezy summer afternoon at the farmhouse brought Alex Day outside into the sunshine. His chores were finished, so his mum had exempted him from duty and allowed him to go off on his own for the rest of the day.

Alex had brought his fishing pole down to the river as an alibi for his presence to any passerby who may happen upon him (which, in the middle of the wide plains of Oklahoma, was not very likely, but one can never be too careful.)

The boy cast his line (even though there wasn’t actually any bait on it) and plunged the pole about an inch or two into the soil. Now he could do what he came here for.

Alex lied down on his stomach in the grass, propping his head up on his hands and staring out across the water. He squinted at the small cabin that sat there, finding no sign of life save the few chickens that pecked at the ground near its entrance. He had his doubts whether the boy would come today, but he reminded himself firmly that nobody stayed inside for too long around here. They were all country people, and you could hardly maintain crops from your bedroom. He would be here.

He allowed his mind to drift the redhead he awaited. What was he doing now? He didn’t know much about him. His family had just moved here from Kansas-family being the boy, his mother, his brother, and sister. Alex wondered where the boy’s father was. It wasn’t common in these parts to have a woman as head of house.
The only other thing Alex knew about the boy was his name. He supposed it was a nice name; he couldn’t really call it “elegant” or “beautiful” or anything. It was just a name to him. A name that belonged to an elegant and beautiful person, no doubt, but a rose by any other name would still smell as sweet, right? Or whatever it was Juliet said in the play? He couldn’t remember it verbatim; he recalled zoning out for most of the lesson since his eighth grade teacher was fond of droning on about metaphors and-

A clatter brought Alex back to the present and scrambling to his feet. From across the water, a tall redhaired boy had emerged from the cabin and was throwing seeds out of a feedsack. The chickens scuttled over and began pecking around the boy’s feet. He smiled.

“Charlie!” Had he just said that aloud? He must have, because the boy was now looking across the stream at him. He was still smiling. Alex felt himself blushing. The boy began making his way down the hill towards the river, towards Alex.

“Hi,” Charlie said, smiling sweetly. That smile, Alex thought. It could drive a guy mad.

“Uh, hi,” Alex replied, rather nervous. This was the first time he’d actually interacted with the angelic stranger; he’d been watching him from across the water until now.

“Um... Are you busy?” he asked suddenly.

The taller boy blinked at him. His eyes were just as easy to be captivated by as his smile. “Well, no, I just have to feed the chickens, and then I’m free. Why?” He cocked his head to the side a bit, curious.

“Do you wanna come over?” he blurted, his mouth no longer under his brain’s control. Alex what are you doing you can’t just invite your hot neighbor over without having ever talked to them before what are you doing THINK OF SOMETHING YOU TWAT

“My mum and I thought we should get to know our new neighbors. Since we live so close and everything.” Nice. Alex mentally high-fived himself for such a slick save. “You can take some of my mum’s bread home for your family-she’s been baking today.” Alex gave what he thought was a winning smile.

The boy thought for a moment. The side of his mouth hitched up in a small grin. “Okay,” he said. “I’ll finish with the chickens and be right over.” He jogged back up to the top of the hill and waved. Alex waved back.

Success! He grabbed his fishing pole and raced back to his house. He told his mum that their really really handsome new neighbor was coming over and to save a loaf of bread for him.

“Finally!” she said. “I was hoping you’d finally talk to the boy instead of just staring at him across the river for days!”
Alex gaped. How could she--?

“Mothers know everything, sweetheart,” she said, patting his head and leaving flour in his hair. “Don’t underestimate us.”

Alex decided it was probably not a good idea to question them either. He shook his head and powder flew everywhere.
