Daniel closed his eyes and took a long, deep breath. He could feel Janet watching him. He had so much he wanted to say, and so little time before it might be too late. Tomorrow they would all meet at Sam’s lab and if all went as planned, Janet would leave through the gate and he, well to be honest he’d probably be dead.
Or maybe not. If they could actually pull this off, none of this would have happened. He might actually have gotten up the nerve to ask her out on a date in that timeline. Knowing himself, probably not, but he could hope things might be different for the two of them, given a second chance.
When the treaty had been made with the Ichen, everything had changed. The team had broken up. Hell, it had taken a ceremony to bring them all together again. It was the first time he’d seen Janet in years. They’d spoken a few times, but it had always seemed awkward. Mainly because he’d never said what he really wanted to.
They were in Daniel’s hotel room, sitting on the edge of his bed, which suddenly seemed very small. Sam was probably telling her husband what they had discovered right at this moment. He only hoped things were going better for her. And then there was Jack. Daniel wasn’t sure what he was doing. After they’d left the restaurant Jack had headed off in the opposite direction telling them he’d meet them tomorrow.
How had things gotten so messed up?
“Daniel.” Janet’s voice was soft and calm. He opened his eyes and found her face very close to his. “What’s going on in the head of yours?”
“So much I think it might explode,” he rubbed his tired eyes.
“I know what you mean. You think we can do this?”
“I don’t know, Janet. I really don’t,” he gave her a sad smile. “One good thing came out of all this.”
“What’s that?”
“It got us all in the same room again.”
She sighed. “It is a shame isn’t it? There was a time when I thought we’d always see each other everyday.”
“We just fell apart.” Daniel swallowed back the pain that was creeping into his voice.
“I’m sorry I didn’t call more.”
“It wasn’t your fault. I could have picked up the phone just as easily. I didn’t even know how unhappy you were, that you felt your job was obsolete. But you’re wrong. You could never be useless, Janet.”
He saw her cheeks redden slightly. “Thanks Daniel. I guess we both messed up.” She gave him a broken smile before her eyes drifted to the floor.
“Yeah.” He whispered hoping it would hide the sadness and regret in his voice.
“I’ve missed you...all of you. I saw Sam a few times. But things never felt the same. I can’t believe we didn’t see how lost we were. Letting them lead us around like lap dogs.”
“We were idiots.” Daniel cringed. “We really were.”
Janet scooted closer to him. He reacted without thinking, which was probably a good thing. Over analyzing had always been one of his faults. His arm slid around her shoulders, and he pulled her close. She melted against him. He rested his head on top of hers. Janet’s soft hair tickled his nose and he breathed her in, she smelled warm and sweet. It calmed his frayed nerves.
This felt right.
“This feels right,” she whispered against his shoulder.
“You read my mind.”
She laughed and lifted her head up. Then without a word, she kissed him. It was better than he ever could have imagined. It was hard, warm, wet, and full of need. He met her passion, and then some.
They fell back onto the bed. Daniel was on his back, Janet was on him. She draped one leg across his waist, while her free hand was massaging the back of his neck. He slid his own hands up her shirt and under her bra.
They kissed for a while. Time seemed to blur. All he knew was her smell, touch, taste, and warmth. Nothing else existed. His tongue caressed her lips, she shuddered and deepened the kiss. Then she slowly pulled away, panting.
She gently removed his glasses and set them on the table next to the bed. “Daniel,” her voice was hoarse.
“Did you want to stop?” He could hear the worry in his voice. He didn’t breathe until she smiled down at him.
“That would be a no.”
He laughed. “Me either.”
“I just...I wish. I wish we had more time. I might not...what if I don’t see you again?”
He felt his eyes start to burn. “I know. I should have told you sooner. Janet I-,”
She pressed her fingers to his lips. “I know. Me too.”
Then they were kissing each other again, tears mixed with lust and love. He needed this more than he had ever needed anything. He needed to feel her.
His hands removed her bra, and he flung it to the side. His fingers massaged her hard nipples. She pressed herself against his erection. He groaned. She gasped.
They didn’t waste anymore time. Clothes were gone within moments. The only thing that separated their bodies was skin. His hands traveled up and down her perfect form. She felt so good against him. They rolled and he was on top.
Daniel’s lips started at her nose, and worked their way down. His fingers slid inside of her, she was wet and trembling. Her body arched against him. His tongue teased her nipples, while his fingers slid deeper inside. He stroked her clit. Her moans grew louder, her breathing more rapid. She panted his name. He pressed his erection against her, and groaned.
Her hands found him and she began working her magic.
She cried out several moments later, gasping and pulling him even closer until there was no space between them. “Daniel. I want you.”
He didn’t need any other encouraging as he slid into her. It was heaven. This was right. They moved together, starting slow. Their bodies slick with sweat and lust. The heat began to build. They moved faster, their eyes locked. All he could hear was her, all he could feel was her, all he wanted was her.
Them came together. Crying out.
They didn’t pull apart for several minutes. They held each other. Kissed, whispered, and caressed. Neither wanted this moment to end.
“Stay with me,” he murmured.
She buried her face against him. “I was never going anywhere.”
Tomorrow their lives would change forever. He might die. But for now he was more alive than he’d ever been in his life. They would always have this one night. No one could take them from them.
