And by those assholes, I'm specifically reffering to those pedantic as fuck people who want to commplain about how, 'um actually, if you watch scene 5 in season 3, episode 16, you'll see that canonically blah, blah, blah.' And by pedantic as fuck, I am, of course, refering to myself. (Ha! Didn't see tht one coming, did you?) But seriously, I know ( Read more... )

True confessions, I've probably made this kind of mistake myself once or twice. And I'm typically a bit more forgiving than my rant would imply, but I was ranting, so... I'm not going to rage-quit because a fic has Kirk get something from a replicator, especially since it's a mistake that's ubiquitous in the fandom. However if you have Kirk use a replicator, mention a Romulan running around in Federation space, and then throw on his combadge, I *will* rage-quit. I will rage-quit and then I will go to lj to rant about how people need to do some goddamn research.

See, my assumption is that all fics all canon-divergent, unless specifically stated to be otherwise. Which is different from canon-compliant in that I get that this person has a story to tell and if that story takes place somewhere in Season Three, I'm not expecting to be able to just stick it in there like a lost episode. What I am expecting is that the story complies to all the world-building and characterization established in the series. So by my standards, most of your fics are actually canon-divergent rather than AU,a term which I reserve for stories that are radically different from canon.
